New Vidalia head coach Josh West graduated from both Natchez HS (Miss.) and Alcorn State. His brother, Troy Johnson also graduated from Natchez and Alcorn State, where he played for both schools and then eventually played in the NFL for the Miami Dolphins for a short time. After talking to Coach West over the phone, he has as much energy as any coach I have talked to in Louisiana and I think he will work hard and succeed at Vidalia.

“We are working hard as a program,” first-year Vidalia head coach Josh West said. “The norm was 15 to 20

kids in the program in the summer, now we have close to 35 to 40 kids out which is exciting. The mindset is changing and the kids are not afraid to work as a young team. On offense, we will have multiple zone read sets and we will also run some triple option.”

In the 2023 Vidalia program you will see a few players playing both sides of the football again. Some key leaders and two-way starters are on this team, including senior RB/SS/LB Kabari Davis (5-10 185) who will be the main running back for the team. Davis has power, speed and experience. You also have senior OL/DL Matthew Long (6-3, 318) who starts on both sides and is a very strong kid with experience.

Don’t forget about, senior ATH Tristan Briggs (6-2, 230) a really good athlete and can play running back, defensive end and linebacker. Although he is small, WR/CB/Returner Kaden Traheren (5-5, 120) is a massive playmaker for this team. Another name to watch out for is senior WR/CB Louis Jordan (6-0, 180) who I think is a sleeper. Jordan has started all four years for Vidalia but has played in only three games in his high school career because of injuries. However, when he is healthy, he can be the most dangerous man on the field. Some other players to watch out for are C/DT Braisen McCraney (5-11, 260) who has great feet and is a tough kid, senior OT/DT Gage Cupstiv (5-11, 260) who also has good feet and WR/CB Marc Perkins who is a new player but he has tons of ability. The Vikings also have a really good quarterback in second-year starter who is extremely athletic as he can dunk a basketball despite being 6-1, OL Brayden Duplichin (6-1, 300) and talented DE/OLB Tyson Davis who has 4.6 speed.

Vidalia’s special teams have one of the bigger kicking specialists in the state returning in Ephran Clark (6-2, 230).
