West Monroe Produces DI Special Teams Duo In 2020 Season
by Trent Schachter
Last season, West Monroe High School featured one of Louisiana’s strongest special team duos in Luke Stagg and Peyton Todd. As a result of their success in high school, they will be taking their talents to the collegiate level this fall. Todd has committed to punt for LSU and Stagg has committed to kick at ULM. Though they will be parting ways, Todd and Stagg will always be able to reflect on their special teams dominance while playing for West Monroe.
Still, Stagg is ecstatic to suit up and get on the field for ULM this season.
“I’m pretty excited,” Stagg said. “There’s a new coaching staff, a lot of new transfers and we have a lot of big games this year that can put us on the map.”
For Todd, he is also excited to become the next great punter at LSU.
“I want to thank the coaching staff at LSU for giving me the opportunity to punt at LSU and I am excited to continue the great tradition in Baton Rouge,” Todd said earlier in the summer.
This Fall, LSU and ULM will be facing off in Baton Rouge and although Stagg and Todd will be playing against each other, West Monroe’s special teams unit will be on full display in Death Valley.
Stagg and Todd have trained hard to perfect their craft during their time at West Monroe and are now ready to be a part of ULM and LSU’s football teams.
Stagg cannot wait to “Get the opportunity to prove myself and be a part of the football experience.”
With a lot of big names like Kentucky, Jackson State, and LSU on ULM’s schedule this season, Stagg will surely get a chance to prove himself.
At these big games, there will be thousands of people watching and being a kicker is not a job for the faint-hearted. When all eyes are on them in big moments, kickers can be all the difference and make or break a team’s season. While Stagg senses the pressure, he never lets it affect his performance stating, “There’s a lot of pressure, but I just keep my head down and follow through. That’s all I worry about.”
With a mindset like that, Stagg should be sending the ball through the uprights at ULM for years to come.
Meanwhile, Todd has the leg as well as a linebacker’s mentality that will help him at LSU. Stagg and Todd’s experiences in Monroe have helped prepare both for this moment.
