Mason Fernandez Uses Powerlifting Experience As Standout Assumption Linebacker
by Jace LeJeune
At 6-2, 235 pounds, Mason Fernandez is one of the sleeper prospects in the Houma area. With his frame and size, it is not a surprise that the Assumption High School linebacker is also one of the strongest players on his team as well. In fact, Fernandez is one of the strongest players on his team as he is a powerlifter. In the weight room, Fernandez can bench press 315 pounds, squat 500 pounds, and can deadlift 515 pounds. The experience that Fernandez has had as a powerlifter has also helped him tremendously on the football field.
“I believe my physical strength and relentlessness makes a big difference in my game,” Fernandez said. “It doesn’t matter what size the opponent is. They are getting their work cut out for them when I’m around.”
It is not only physical strength that Fernadez takes away from his powerlifting that helps him with football, but it is also his mental strength as well.
“I take the hard work aspect from powerlifting and the competitiveness into football,” Fernandez said. “You may miss a lift and have a bad workout same as having a bad football practice, and maybe your competitor had an awesome day, but you have to consistently bust your tail day in and day out. You have to want it more than the other guy or it will be exposed sometime.”
In order for opposing players not to expose those weaknesses, Fernandez is working even more to improve on all of the areas to his game.
“Honestly, I need to improve on everything,” Fernandez said. “No matter how good I get at something, especially on the field, I will always find a way to improve everything and constantly work at it to perfect it.”
For Fernandez, he will do whatever and whenever it takes to perfect his craft.
“Only a few people know how hard I’ll work,” Fernandez said. “I’ve spent early mornings at 3:00 A.M. and late nights past midnight just to reach perfection. Something deep inside me tells me 24/7 that someone is out there working harder so I work day in and day out.”
The hard work has paid off as the All-District selection has received many JUCO offers. Although Fernandez is still trying to make his decision, what he will guarantee is that he is going to give his best effort for a college football program the next couple of seasons.
“I will bring that energy to the field that they want including big hits and big plays,” Fernandez said.
There is no question that the passion and intensity will be translated for this powerlifter on the college gridiron.
