Head Coach: Patrick Clarkston (2nd Year)
2022 Record: 7-4
Class & District: Class 1A (District 9)
2022 Playoffs: Lost to Cedar Creek 30-0 in 1st Round of Division IV (Select) Playoffs
“We lost 10 seniors from 2022 and that’s a big group for us to replace in one year, said Slaughter Community HS head coach Patrick Clarkston. “We are very young but we will have a lot of sophomores and the good thing about that is this group is that they will be starting for us for the next three years.”
The Knights have talented skill players but the key is staying healthy in the trenches to make a run. The offense will go through WR/CB Joshua Thomas, a three-year starter with 4.6 speed and a big-time playmaker for the program. When the team needs yards on the ground, senior RB Willie Bell (5-11, 220) will be the guy to make this engine go with a nice burst and has power spells trouble for teams in Class 1A trying to tackle him. The offense also has WR/FS Thomas Carter gifted player with 4.6 speed and RB/LB Carson Baxter, who will play some Wildcat when needed for tough yards. The Knights also have a talented QB/FS in senior Ty’Kimian Ford (6-1, 165) with a good arm and feet in the pocket and can run when needed for the team. The rest of the starters to lead the team going into the fall are three-year starting DT/OG Jayden Lavespere (6-1, 280) who has 5.0 speed and lots of strength, team leader OLB/SS Tracy Harris (5-10, 155), OLB Kyron Jackson (6-2, 170) who is both tough and quick (4.6 speed), OL/DL Terrance Armstead (5-11, 290) who is both quick and strong, senior TE Curt Wyre (6-1, 185) who is a good blocking tight end, OL Hayden Millican (5-10, 180), LB Kaden Oakley (5-10, 170) and young players battling for spots in the fall.
Coach Clarkston went to New Iberia HS (Class of 1999) and played college football played at Snow College (Utah) and UL-Lafayette. Two players signed from the 2023 class: Caleb Brooks signed with Texas Wesleyan and Wyatt Knight signed with Millsaps College. Clarkston’s college teammates were former NFL cornerbacks Charles Tillman (Chicago Bears) and Ike Taylor (Pittsburgh Steelers).
