The University Lab Cubs have advanced to the semifinals 11 years in a row. The program has won six state titles overall. Four out of the program’s six state titles have been won in the past nine years. U-High’s most recent state title was in 2021 to finish the season 13-0.
“We are a team that is hungry as we did not get the job done in 2022,” U-High head coach Andy Martin said. “The kids have the motivation to finish in 2023. We had a great spring & summer so far as a team.”
The offense for the first time in 2 years will have a new quarterback(s) in 2023. Two talented players are competing for this spot in senior Garrett Graves (6-2, 190), who had a great spring and a young but talented QB Emile Picarella who transferred from St. Joseph High School in Madison, Mississippi. Both quarterbacks are good enough to lead this team to a state championship.
The run game will have a chance to be one of the best in Baton Rouge led by senior RB Riley Small (5-11, 195, 4.6 speed), RB/LB Keylan Moses (6-3, 215, 4.45 speed) and younger players rotating in as well. Moses and Small will be quite the duo in 2023 to stop.

The offense also returns star WR Seth Gale (4.4 speed), great hands and runs great routes. Graves recorded 1,361 all-purpose yards with 14 total touchdowns last season. There’s also Granville Anderson (5-9, 180, 4.6 speed) who is another playmaker. There will be some younger players who will get their shot behind these kids.
The offensive line will be big and these kids can move. The line will build around OL/DT Jarvis Brookshire (6-1, 270), OL John Hebert (6-1, 230), OL Preston Jones (6-4, 285), senior center Tucker Latour (6-0, 230), two-way starter DT/OL Lamar Brown (6-5, 265) and OL/DT Kayson Hill (6-0, 265).

The defense will be led by its strong experienced linebacker unit that is led by two-time All-State senior LB Harry Beacham (6-1, 220). There’s also leader LB Alec Haynes (6-2, 225), LB Keylan Moses (6-3, 215), LB Riley Small, senior OLB/CB Patrick Beacham (6-1, 185), who is a second-year starter and LB/DE Trushaad Bush 6-3 215. The defensive line has a chance to be one of the best in Louisiana led by young DT/DE LaMar Brown, senior DE Laramie Guidry (6-6, 240) sleeper and two-way starter Kayson Hill.
The defensive backfield has experience, speed and size back in senior SS/FS Tommy Green (5-9, 170, 4.6) speed tough leader second-year starter, senior CB Tony Burns (6-0, 180, 4.59 speed) who is a second-year starter and the younger brother of LSU safety Major Burns, three-year starter senior FS Marcus Dawson (6-2, 195, 4.5 speed), CB Patrick Beacham 6-1 185 SR leader and talented CB Jayden Glosten (4.4 speed).
The special teams right now Seth Gale will start as the kicker and punter for the team.
