September 1, 2010 - Every year in Louisiana there are great teams in high school football, either because they have great coaches, great defense, a great QB and leader, a powerful running game or all of these.

In my 20 years of following and going to high games I’ve learned that in 5A, 4A, and 3A classifications in Louisiana, these teams have to have a lot of everything to get to the big dance in the Superdome in December to play for all the marbles.  In 1A and 2A, I’ve learned who can have coaching, a strong defense or great QB or just a few great leaders on both sides of the ball to get you there.

Well ladies and gentleman this year I find 2A to be the toughest I’ve ever seen it to get to the Dome, and I find it will be the toughest out of all of  the classifications in Louisiana. It will take more than coaching and a handful of great players to get there in 2010.

In a normal year you might see two or three teams in 2A that are no brainers to get to the dome.  This year I see 8 teams that have all the intangibles, and 16 teams that are loaded with either young talent or experienced talent.  Let’s take a look at my top 2A teams in the state based on talent, coaching, and experience going into the 2010 season.  I personally went to almost all of these schools in the spring, and filmed all of these schools last year.  In so many words I’ve seen these kids in person and in game film to give a state  wide opinion based on the truly the best teams coming back.

#1  John Curtis - Great coaching and lots of experience returns, and  lots of history of winning big in the playoffs over the last 30 years . RB Torrey Pierce (5-8, 170) is really a great high school back, and LB Seth Jones (6-1, 225) is a tackling machine.  The front seven for Curtis will be big and tough on defense.

#2 Capitol - One play away from going to the Dome last year, and I think could be a better team in 2010. Their huge up front on the offensive line lead by LSU Commitment Corey White (6-4, 310), they are one of the fastest  2 A teams in the state, and Defense is big and fast lead by veteran LB/SS Fredrick Wilson (6-0, 200), who hits with the best of them.

# 3 Calvary Christian - I predict this is the year for Calvary, and their program has really built up some great skill and a bigger playoff ready Offensive and Defensive Line to play with anyone. QB is strong, running game is strong, and defense is lead by a sleeper, the small but quick CB Ira Jewitt. This could be the year Calvary beats Evangel for district champs.

# 4 Evangel Christian – Evangel lost a ton of talent from last year, and were State Champs in 2009, defeating John Curtis. You can’t count these guys out, with the State’s top Stat QB returning in David Dee Duron, who passed for over 4,000 yards in 2009, and the sack master DE Jermauria Rasco (6-3, 245). The depth is not there like in 2009, but this team could make a run in the playoffs again. Key is new kids in the system have to grow up fast something this program hasn’t had to do in the past as much.

# 5 East Feliciana - This is the new school name for the combined schools of Clinton and Jackson. Remember Clinton was already going to be great in 2010, and now they have all the Jackson players which had a ton of speed and talent. RB Joe Robinson (5-7, 175) is one of the most exciting players in the state with the ball in his hands. The offensive line goes about 260 per man.

# 6 Riverside - Mickey Roussel is back as head football coach of the Rebels, and inherits one of the most talented skill teams I’ve ever seen at Riverside. The offensive line is lead by veteran big guys Dale Martin (6-2, 235) and Todd Millet (6-0, 290), and Defense is tough with DE Andrew Vicknair (6-3, 225).

# 7 Farmerville - This team has a lot of experience back, great coaching, and a big time DB/WR in Carl Pearson (6-2, 190). The offensive line is big tough and mean.

# 8   Red River - On paper and in person, you will not find a better looking team of 35 to 40 players than Red River. Twins Darius Clark (5-11, 230) and Darion Clark (5-11, 230) are DI built and both play RB and LB.  Athletes  Jeremy Logan (6-3, 190) and Cordarius Smith (6-0, 185), are under the radar kids who look big time in games and both run 4.5 in the forty.

Here are some other teams that are very strong to make a run in the playoffs. I call this my sleeper teams.  This will show you how deep 2A is this year. I never see this many good teams in 2A in one year across the state. These schools are not listed in any order.

Ferriday - Talented and big in the trenches

Sterlington -  Young  and talented

Homer - Always tons of skill talent

Many - A lot of seniors coming back and some great skill players

Opelousas Catholic - Great coaches and a  large senior group back

Dunham - Not a lot of depth in the trenches, but enough skill talent to make a run in the playoffs

Winnfield - A very talented mix of young and older kids, that could make a run

Iota - I like the senior group coming back, lots of experience on offensive line and run game

Episcopal - A tough bunch of kids lead by Athlete Jared Rogers and   the athlete   QB Vincent Dellocono.

Newman - Might be the best Newman team I’ve seen overall going into a season

St. Charles - Great Coaches  and tough kids , very talented on offense

Donaldsonville - I love their skill talent on offense lead by Titus Howard, Jarrett Cole, and Devon Breaux

Port Barre - Best team in a few years. Skill talent is back up.

Rosepine - Team is full of seniors and tough kids. Kameron Suire RB (220 pounds) and Gary Suydam (210 pounds) are tough to stop in 2A.

University High - New offense , great skill talent, tough kids

Many - WR/DB Roderick Davis 6-3 195, and RB Garrett King are a heck of a one two punch on offense.
