Lee’s Northwestern State Trip

by Lee Brecheen

March 18, 2010 - I was able to sit down and visit with Head Coach Bradley Dale Peveto from Northwestern State and many of his staff members. It was good to run into some coaches I knew from other places in past like Jay Thomas former Head Coach of Nicholls State, now the Defensive Line coach at Northwestern State, and Jeremy Wilburn, former Northwestern State player who prepped at Byrd in Shreveport and is now a Grad assistant at Northwestern State. Jay Thomas did great things at Nicholls State, when he took over that program. It was under probation, and his teams always competed and beat teams many times who had more talent than Nicholls State. I was always impressed with his ability to get his teams to play way over their ability. You can look at the players Jay recruited that ended up in the NFL from Nicholls State. There are 3 players currently in the NFL, prior to that they had only one. Some of the best places to eat in the state of Louisiana are in Natchitoches. I was able in my two days to hit some of these great places.

Justin Aldredge

I was really impressed talking to QB Tyler Wolfe, (6-5, 230), who’s finally healthy after playing last year hurt, and true sophomore QB Paul Harris, who looks to be more heavier in a good way. Paul went from 175 in weight to almost 190. These two QBs will help each other in a very fast pace skilled athletic offense.

Bradley Brown

WR/Athlete Bradley Brown, I predict, will have a breakout season in 2010. Bradley played as a true freshman in 2009 from Capitol high school. HB/TE Justin Aldredge (6-0, 228) , who will be a Junior in 2010 , went from being a QB two years ago out of Cedar Creek to a fast athletic athlete on offense, and he was the team’s best player in 2009. Justin can run in the forty in 4.55 seconds. This kid has found a home, and could be a NFL draft pick when done.

DJ Shaw

I had a chance to talk to Defensive Tackles D J Shaw (6-0, 265), a transfer from West Virginia, and Dennis Clark, (6-1, 260). These guys look quick in a jersey, when I took their picture. Watch out for these two new starters as they will be the key to the defense for a great season for Northwestern State.

I saw and interviewed over twenty players in person that will either start or be on the two deep, and I left seeing a more athletic team; a team that could surprise with so many good athletes. The key is the lineman staying healthy on Offensive Line and Defensive Line because that’s where there thin going into the 2010 season. I do think they’re more talented on the Lines, just not deep with depth. The skill talent I believe will start shaping up in wins this year for the team. Bradley Dale Peveto is one of the best recruiters I know in the United States, and I feel with more time, he will not only win, but win big. This is a coach that had to personally coach the Linebackers, because he lost a coach during the season, and lost another member of the staff from defense before the season. This staff was two coaches short on defense for the whole season. I think the hire of Jay Thomas to coach Defensive Line was huge, and a key to greatly improved defense.

Albert Smith

I also ran into Defensive Tackle Albert Smith who was training at the stadium. Albert told me he was (6-1, 305), and let me tell you he was in great shape, and he moves really well. I saw this kid running sprints and you would not think he was 305 pounds. Albert told me he can run a 4.9 forty, and can vertical jump 33 inches. Albert said he loved his experience at Northwestern State, and he thinks Bradley Dale Peveto will turn things around soon. Albert was excited about the weight room improvements lately at the school. Albert could go in the late rounds in the NFL draft, but he’s certainly a lock to be a free agent with a NFL team. Albert played high school ball at Central Lafourche HS. The NFL pro day is this Friday for Northwestern State, and LB Isiah Greenhouse (6-2, 240), also will be there. Albert thinks Isiah will have a chance at running the forty in 4.5 seconds at 240 pounds. Albert says that Greenhouse can Bench Press 225 pounds thirty-five times. Wow, that’s impressive!

Next road trip will be McNeese State Cowboys in Lake Charles.
