It was really good to go see former LSU ALL SEC Defensive End James Gillyard, who is know the Head Football Coach at Hammond High School. James is one nice guy, who takes his head coaching job serious, and is trying to build Hammond back to the old days of winning. I remember watching James play QB for Woodlawn in Shreveport, once upon a time, then teamed up with Gabe Northern to give LSU one heck of a pair of book ends in the SEC. There’s a nice amount of talent coming up at Hammond high school, and I look for this team to be much improved in Gillyards first year to be head coach. I meet at least 10 players that will make an impact in college one day at some level. I will have more on that in future stories.

I went to meet with Head Coach Mike Lucas, and Recruiting Coordinator Matt Webb. You will not meet nicer guys than these coaches. We were able to talk about the team some and I had a chance to meet some of the players I saw in high school many times. I was super impressed in how the Linebacker core has turned out for the coaches and the Lions team for 2010. When you look at Avery Crooks (6-2, 225), Ryan Godare (6-0, 225), Mark Newbill (5-11, 225), these guys are studs and they can run and hit with the best of them. Southeastern only starts two linebackers in their scheme, but this team goes 5 deep, and its 5 deep with NFL talent mixed among the group. Avery Crooks is a second year LB from Higgins on the Westbank of New Orleans, and looks like an NFL linebacker in person. Newbill and Godare are the two starters that could both make ALL Southland conference in 2010. The other three linebackers would start for most teams in the Southland Conference. They are Kendrick Jackson (6-2, 225), who will be a junior, Tim Richardson (6-0, 225) who will be a senior, and young Red Shirt freshman Jordan McClay (5-10, 215), who is a future star.

I was able to talk to Tommy Connors (6-0, 202) who is getting a year back from the NCAA after getting hurt last year as a true senior. Tommy was a freshman ALL American. Tommy is mature beyond his years, and when you talk to this kid you can tell he’s a leader. His little brother might end up being his roommate. Tommy played at Archbishop Shaw on the Westbank. The little brother is a big time hitter, and will be a true freshman. He is Sean Connors, who’s 5-10, 190 pounds. Sean will probably be a SS like his brother.
I was impressed with the size of the offensive lineman that are coming back. OT Gasten Gabriel (6-5, 290), Josh Penton (6-3, 275), and Kevin Hughes (6-4, 290) are good looking starters.
We will have more on the team, when we put out our preview issue in July of this year.
