February 19, 2010 - I’ve never seen a state where people say the talent is down, but 47 players signed out of State. The talent is not down. Just ask the schools that signed the 47 players from Louisiana. Out of the 47 players I predict 34 players have a chance to play as a true freshman on Offense, Defense or Special Teams. That’s under 10 players redshirting. That tells me these kids are not second level DIV 1 players but impact players that can make a DIV 1 programs two deep after fall practice.
This is part one of two. In part two I will talk about the players that will make an immediate impact as a true freshman and why.
In order of total number of Louisiana signees by school:

A First Time Zero Signees
Southern Mississippi for the first time in over 15 years did not sign a Louisiana player. This is a program that usually has at least 4 to 5 Louisiana natives starting out of the 22 starters every year. Southern Mississippi has over 15 players on its Roster, one of the highest totals for any school outside Louisiana that’s a DIV 1 program.

A First Time
Miami - Ohio signed its first Louisiana player in over 30 years by taking FB/TE Dustin White from Barbe High School. It doesn’t hurt when your Current Head Coach Mike Haywood used to recruit Lake Charles for LSU a few years back, and when a current staff member was an assistant for McNeese State in Lake Charles.
Northwestern - Illinois of the Big 10 signed their first Louisiana player in over 15 years in Collin Ellis the 6-1, 210 pound RB/LB from Dunham HS. Northwestern Assistant Jim Bates recruited Louisiana for Louisiana Tech a few years ago.
