August 19, 2011 - Sometimes when you watch film or go watch recruits at a high school game it’s easy to point out the top no brainer recruits very fast.  However, sometimes when you go to a game like I do and watch film you really have to do your homework to find some real hidden gems in the state like Hunter Alario from South Lafouche High School in the Galliano Cutoff Area.

Why is Hunter a hidden gem?  Well for starters he plays so many positions for his team (RB, LB, DE,TE) and plays them all so well it’s hard to get a read of where to put him in college.  If you watch a lot of games of this kid like I did in 2010, then you get an idea where he can play in college.  I like this kid at Linebacker or Fullback in college.  He’s 6-0 tall, weighs 210 pounds, runs a 4.7/40, and will run through a wall if you tell him to to help the team.  This kid had 58 tackles on defense in 2010, and he ran for 8 touchdowns on offense and caught 28 passes as a Wide Receiver.

I think Fullback because he’s so tough and runs with a control lean and has that wiggle in his feet to run for extra yards after he’s hit.  He also has soft hands which makes him very much an all around Fullback for the next level.  Linebacker is a position he could play based on pure toughness, size, and speed for Middle Linebacker for a IAA school.  I think with the right DI school he could play Fullback if he walked on and waited his turn like all the great walk on fullbacks have done over the years.  Hunter will be 220 to 230 in weight after a year in a college weight room.  Remember most DI schools don’t take many if any Fullbacks in their signing class every year.

The bottom line is this kid is good enough to be at either a DI or IAA program, and whoever sees what I see will take the chance on a tough nose football player in the end.

Interview by Mark Clements

LAFM: For starters, what’s your current height, weight and forty time?

HA: I’m 6-foot, 210 and run a 4.75.

LAFM: Are you originally from Louisiana?

HA: Yes – Larose, Louisiana.

LAFM: Which teams did you root for growing up?

HA: LSU and I rooted a little bit for Florida and I always rooted for the Saints.

LAFM: When did you first start playing football?

HA: From the first time they let the youngest person in. I don’t remember the age, but right when I made the age limit I was in it.

LAFM: Has it always been a big part of your family? Have you had any family members who played football in the past?

HA: Yeah, my dad played a little bit and then my older brother played linebacker and his senior year he got an All-State honorable mention.

LAFM: Do you play any other sports?

HA: Yeah, baseball – first base.

LAFM: Do you see yourself playing football, baseball or maybe try to do both at the next level?

HA: I could see myself maybe doing both, but if not both, then football.

LAFM: We have you listed as a linebacker, do you play any other positions?

HA: I play linebacker but also some running back and fullback. On the offensive side of the ball they’ll put me at receiver and tight end and on defense it’s linebacker, d-end or just wherever.

LAFM: Which position do you think is your strongest and where do you see yourself being recruited?

HA: Either linebacker or fullback.

LAFM: Is there anyone in college or the Pros that you look up to or try to model your game after?

HA: No, not really. I’m just worried about what I can do and I don’t really have an idol or anything.

LAFM: What do you think is your biggest strength as a player?

HA: Probably hitting I guess.

LAFM: What part of your game are you trying to improve upon most next year?

HA: Probably getting my speed a little bit better and my vision of the field a little bit better.

LAFM: Have you been to any camps at this point? If so, which ones?

HA: Yeah this summer I went to Northwestern’s camp.

LAFM: Have you received any offers or heard from any coaches so far?

HA: Nicholls, Tulane and McNeese came to the school and talked to a few guys and I was one of them they talked to.

LAFM: Which schools stick out right now at the top of your list?

HA: I kind of like the idea of going to Tulane or maybe even ULM.

LAFM: Is playing close to home a big factor in your recruitment?

HA: I’d be willing to go out of state. I really do want to go to school wherever offers me the best chance. I’ll go out of state if I have to.

LAFM: Have you thought about what you might want to study in college?

HA: Yeah, kinesiology. I would be a physical therapist and start my own business.

LAFM: What are some goals you’ve set for next season, for yourself and for the team?

HA: Individually, just to lead my team as far as we can go and hopefully into the first or second round of the playoffs. That’s what I’m really looking forward to. I guess that’s what the whole team is looking forward to too.

LAFM: Which school is your favorite to play against, or which game gets you the most fired up each year?

HA: Central Lafouche, it’s got a little bit of competiveness going on.

LAFM: What are some of the most memorable games or plays you’ve been a part of?

HA: Yeah probably last year’s Central Lafouche game. I had 2 touchdowns.

LAFM: And lastly can you give us your current GPA and ACT score?

HA: My ACT score is a 21 and my GPA is a 3.0.
