July 25, 2011 - Running Backs are not always easy to spot in recruiting.  You look for speed, vision, hands, cut back ability, power, quickness, size, toughness, and most of all leadership.  RB Ronald Goodly has a lot of the qualities I mentioned above for the next level.  This kid is powerful at 5-10, 210, and quick in space and fast when he needs to be (4.5/40).  He has great hands catching the football, and he can cut back and make people miss.  He’s tough, and I’ve seen him take big hits and come right back with big runs.  He has really good vision, and he’s a leader as a three year starter in a program where most kids start either one or two years tops at Barbe High School in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

Ronald is the poster boy for a sleeper recruit in Louisiana.  He was overshadowed by a great passing game in 2010 which was really rare for their program.  I think Barbe will be more of a balanced offense in 2011, which will give Ronald more carries.  Being a RB/WR in 2010 actually helped him polish his game up for the next level.  I was super impressed watching him go in a slot WR position at times and catch the ball.

I think he’s the best RB to come out of Barbe High School since Justin Vincent from LSU and the Pittsburgh Steelers.  Ronald Goodly has a 2.8 GPA in the classroom, and an ACT score of 18.  He squats over 450 pounds, and if you saw his legs you would see why he’s so strong in the lower body.

Some lucky school will get this kid in the end, whether it’s a top 20 program or an up and coming DI or IAA school.  You will hear about this kid in college one day.

I hope you enjoy the interview below by Mark Clements.

Interview by Mark Clements

LAFM: For starters, what’s your current height, weight and forty time?

RG: My forty time is a 4.5, my height is 5’10” and I weigh 210.

LAFM: Are you originally from Louisiana?

RG: Yessir, I grew up in Lake Charles.

LAFM: Which teams did you root for growing up?

RG: Growing up I rooted for the University of Texas a lot and the New Orleans Saints

LAFM: How did you Texas fanhood come about?

RG: I just liked their colors. I started off liking their colors and then Ricky Williams won the Heisman, I read about that and Ricky Williams is one of my favorite running backs so I liked that.

LAFM: When did you first start playing football?

RG: When I was about six years old.

LAFM: Has it always been a big part of your family and your life?

RG: Yes sir, all kind of sports have been a big part. My family likes to support me when I do my sports.

LAFM: What other sports do you play?

RG: Baseball and I ran track.

LAFM: What position do you play in baseball?

RG: Outfield.

LAFM: What events do you run in track?

RG: The hundred, 200, 4x1 and 4x2.

LAFM: Do you play any other positions besides running back?

RG: I also play receiver.

LAFM: If so, where do you see yourself being recruited?

RG: A slot receiver, hopefully.

LAFM: As a wide receiver or running back, is there anyone in college or the Pros that you try to model your game after?

RG: From college, I used to watch a lot of Mark Ingram and the way he would run. He had good turnover speed. And Ricky Williams how he has nice balance.

LAFM: What do you think is your biggest strength as a player and what part of your game are you trying to improve upon most next year?

RG: I would say my biggest strength is my speed and my hands and the thing that I would like to work on is getting my knees up and get faster.

LAFM: Have you been to any camps at this point? If so, which ones?

RG: In the future I would like to go to Tulane’s. Tulane was looking at me, so hopefully I can get a scholarship there, but I didn’t go to any camps this summer.

LAFM: Which colleges have you heard from?

RG: Tulane and Texas A&M were sending me a lot of letters during school and during the season.

LAFM: Which schools stick out right now at the top of your list? Is playing close to home a big factor in your recruitment?

RG: In my top three it would be Tulane, Texas A&M and if possible to go to a college up north.

LAFM: What’s the biggest things you look at when trying to choose a university?

RG: I’m looking for a combination [of academics or athletics].

LAFM: Have you thought about what you might want to study in college?

RG: I would like to find a school that’s good at medical because I would like to be a physical therapist when I graduate.

LAFM: What are some goals you’ve set for next season, for yourself and for the team?

RG: As a team we’re trying our best to win state and my goal that I set for every season is to go every play all-out without getting tired or letting my team down.

LAFM: Which school is your favorite to play against, or which game gets you the most fired up each year?

RG: Sulfur. Sulfur is the biggest rivals and it’s the highest game that most people are going to watch, so it’s the best game I like to play.

LAFM: What are some of the most memorable games or plays you’ve been a part of?

RG: My sophomore year I scored my first touchdown against Sulfur in a varsity game to help us come back and win.
