July 12, 2011 - Over the past 25 years I’ve seen some great Amite High School football players that have went on to college and had success and in the NFL. I’ve also seen some great players move on to college and for some reason or another, like a lot of kids or players, the success or potential not be fulfilled.

QB/Ath Michael Carr in the early 1990’s was a gifted kid who signed with Clemson, but never played much and did not finish at Clemson, was one of the greatest Amite High School players I had ever seen play. LB/RB Eric Foster was a man among boys in high school as a RB and LB.  He was 6-1, 225 to 230 pounds running a 4.5/40 and tough as nails, and he enjoyed success at ULM in Monroe and some years in the NFL. Currently Safety Antonio Baker is a free agent with the Houston Texans, and was all world at Louisiana Tech and in high school. DE Aaron Morgan I loved as a upside kid in high school, and if you go back and look at my lists I had him ranked high when no one did.  He had a great career at ULM in Monroe and is currently with the Jacksonville Jaguars in the NFL. In 2010 Defensive Tackle Donald Pennington, I thought, was every bit as good as Freak Anthony Johnson, but grades made a lot of big schools not offer, and he signed with Memphis, and you might hear of him in the NFL in four years if he wants to be in the NFL.  He’s that good at 6-3, 305 and he runs like a Linebacker.

That gets us to the current big time recruit that I’ve seen at Amite High School, Linebacker Juwaan Rogers, who stands all of 6-1, 230 pounds and runs in the hand clocked time of a 4.6, but looks 4.4/40 on a football field.  Juwann reads as good as any Linebacker I’ve seen in Louisiana, and he might be one of the most physical Linebackers I’ve seen play for a whole season last year.  Rogers is a gifted kid that could start as a Running Back for most teams if that’s where they wanted him, because of his speed and toughness. He does play a lot of Fullback because he loves contact and loves delivering knock out blocks on offense.  Rogers was also All State Linebacker in Class 3A in 2010.

Rogers could play any of the three Linebacker positions in college because he’s built like a Middle Linebacker, but runs like a Outside linebacker. This is a kid that could start right away for any program in the United States as a True Freshman. I would put him in my top four players of all time at Amite that I’ve seen play in 25 years. My list would be QB Michael Carr, Eric Foster, then Juwaan Rogers, then DT Donald Pennington.

Juwaan Rogers carries a 2.65 GPA in the classroom, and I predict this kid will get over 50 offers or so I after his senior season. Ole Miss and LSU have been recruiting him since the end of his junior season, and so have several other schools, but those two were the first to get him to camps and contact him.

This is a strong year for Linebackers for Louisiana.  There are at least 10 Linebackers that could play for anyone in America, when the state usually only has one or two or none that have the ability on a given year. We have written about 5 Linebackers now, and still have several more to write about before the year is over.
