Live Oak Head Coach David Dykes

June 6, 2011 - When I think of the history of Donaldsonville football I think of one of the all time great high school coaches in Louisiana, Jimmy Dykes, who was the head football coach for 17 years at Donaldsonville High School.  Now in the year 2011 another Dykes, David Dykes, will be entering his second year as the head coach of Live Oak High School.  David Dykes is the son of Jimmy Dykes and played for his dad at Donaldsonville High School during the Era of a great Defensive Line at Donaldsonville in Howard Green and Jarvis Green, two cousins that both played in Super Bowls.  Howard Green, recently with the Packers in 2010 winning the Super Bowl, and Jarvis Green with the Patriots.

I met David Dykes when he was the Offensive line coach for Central when Sid Edwards came in and turned Central into playoff contenders again.  David spent 6 years as the offensive line coach for Central, but has also coached at Central LaFouche as the offensive line coach and South Terrebonne as the Offensive Coordinator.

David was around some great players at Central on the offensive side of the ball in QB Tyler Wolfe (6-5, 225) from Louisville and Northwestern State colleges and will be in an NFL camp once lock out is over, WR Johdrick Morris (6-3, 225) from Southern Mississippi and will be in a NFL camp once lock out is over, and also WR Wes Briscoe currently McNeese State and his brother, QBWill Briscoe, McNeese State.  At Central Lafourche he coached OG/DT Terrance Ford, who went on to play with Southern Miss and made All Conference and still has a shot to play more Pro Ball.  Terrance was a quick 6-1, 300 pound DT in college.

David has 11 years of high school coaching on his resume, and he enters his second year at Live Oak. Last year Live Oak went 3-7 on the season in a tough district which included in 2010 playoff heavyweights Catholic, Denham Springs, Zachary, and Central.

I look for the team to be improved after seeing the kids in person recently while they were working out.  They seem bigger and look stronger as a team. The numbers are at an all time high with over 96 players out for football.  I think in the next 3 years this school could be a big contender with the growth of the area and having greater depth as a team every year from here on out. These kids play hard every year.

We will have more on the current players for Live Oak and the team in our 2011 Preview which you can pre-order off the website by going to www.lafootballmagazine.com/store.

Notes

Former Central WR Zack Morris, who was on the offensive side of the ball when Coach Dykes coached Offensive Line at Central is now a coach at Live Oak High School.

David Dykes is a graduate of Nicholls State University in Thibodeaux.

Quarterback Tyler McGrew who was the Quarterback for Live Oak in 2010, will play college baseball in 2011 for a Louisiana in state school.  He’s still undecided.  He’s the second QB in a row starting at Live Oak to either sign baseball or football.  QB David Bell (6-3, 225) signed with Southern Arkansas in 2009.

Former Head Coach at Live Oak High School, Robbie Mahfouz is now a teacher and assistant coach for the football team for the 2011 season.
