| Coach J.T. Curtis with Lee Brecheen on the LA Football TV Magazine set a few years back. |
May 31, 2011 - Louisiana currently has one of the top ranked Coaches, nationally and for Louisiana, in state titles and wins for high school football in J.T.Curtis of John Curtis High School in River Ridge, Louisiana.
J.T. has 494 wins with only 52 losses and 6 ties in 41 years of coaching at one school, John Curtis. That’s a winning percentage of 89.5 which is just off the charts for any level of coaching, whether it’s college, high school, or pro.
J.T. Curtis also has 23 State Titles to his resume; 11 State Titles in AA, 4 in AAA, and 8 in AAAA. John Curtis High School was runner up in the state title game in 2010 to Evangel Christian High School.
J.T. Curtis had one of the youngest teams that I can remember in a long time in 2010, and still took his team to the State Title game in 2010. I predict they’re the team to beat in 2011 for the 2A State Title. The running game is back with experience, the OL is big and tough, and the front seven on defense is mostly intact with more size and depth for 2011.
John Curtis is one of the few schools in Louisiana where you better set up an appointment during spring practice, because every college coach in America has an appointment with J.T. to hear what he has to say about his upcoming players every year for college. At any given time they’re could be 10 to 15 coaches lined up in a waiting room from LSU or Alabama to Navy waiting to talk to the dean of coaches in Louisiana.
J.T. is a great coach, and what I like about the school and what he’s done is the staff is mostly family and former Curtis players that know the system, and everyone is on the same page. One thing about John Curtis High School is when you play them, you know they’re going to run the football, and to beat them you have to stop the run. They’re one of the few high school football teams that have been successful by not switching to a spread offense or feeling like they have to throw the ball in today’s pass happy era of offenses. I really enjoy watching J.T. coached teams play because of the old school football, and how well coached the kids are. You can see the coaching with these kids. I rarely ever see more than 2 penalties in a game from a J.T. team.
I will have more on the team and their players in our upcoming preview magazine that will be available in August. You can pre-order the magazine on the website at www.lafootballmagazine.com/store.
Notes
Everybody knows about Joe McKnight, RB/Athlete, from John Curtis High School and USC, and now currently the New York Jets as a RB. Joe has a younger brother named Jonathan McKnight who is currently a starting Cornerback for the Arizona Wildcats of the new Pac 12 South. Jonathan played as a true freshman for Arizona in 2010 and did pretty well. Jonathan stands 5-11, 175 pounds and runs a legit 4.45/40.
Former John Curtis High School player P.J. Smith will play a key role for the Free Safety position for Nebraska in 2011. P.J. is currently 6-2, 215 pounds and a Red Shirt Sophomore. P.J. Started his high school career off at John Curtis High School, but finished at Archbishop Rummel.
Former John Curtis Running Back turned Linebacker Kenny Cain (6-1, 210 pounds) will make a name for himself this year at Texas Christian or TCU as it’s known in the football world. Kenny Red Shirted as a freshman and now is a current junior, and will back up the team’s best senior in LB Tank Carder (6-1, 237). Kenny will take over in 2012, and I predict he will have a shot at getting drafted when finished. Kenny can run a legit 4.6/40 and will play a lot this year.
I thought I would throw this in for most people in Louisiana. Alan Faneca, one of the best Offensive Lineman to ever play the game and a future Hall of Famer who just retired from the NFL, started off his high school days at John Curtis. He moved to Houston, Texas, where he finished and was named The Houston Quarterback Club player of the year his senior year. It’s unheard of for a lineman to get that award in high school. Alan played College football for LSU.
