May 16, 2011 - I had a chance to see and talk to one of the best coaches in the state recently in Dale Weiner, head football coach at Catholic High School of Baton Rouge.

Dale Weiner enters his 25th year at Catholic high school for the Bears, and his 37th overall. Dale told me he has 268 wins and 89 losses to date.  I think an interesting note that a lot of people might not realize is since Dale has coached at Catholic High School over a 100 kids have signed with a college, and 10 players have played in the NFL.  They are DB Brandon Harrison, Stanford; LB Marc Stockbauer, Stanford; DT Todd White, Virginia; RB Travis Minor, Florida State; DB Greg Brown, Texas; OT Chris Williams, Vanderbilt; RB Warrick Dunn, Florida State; Punter Donnie Jones, LSU; DB Cory Gaines, Tennessee; and RB Kevin Franklin, LSU and Southern.  All those guys played in the NFL.  Donnie Jones, Travis Minor, and Chris Williams are all currently active in the NFL when the NFL resumes in 2011 hopefully.

Another interesting fact is 8 former Catholic High School Quarterbacks all under Dale Weiner signed with a IAA or DI school since he’s been at the school.  They are Marcus Jacoby, Southern; Jesse Daigle, LSU; Scott Pendarvis, McNeese State; Ryan Lewis, Rice; Major Applewhite, Texas; D.J. Ponder, Tulane; Anthony Fisher, Southern; and in 2010, Zack Oliver, Northwestern .

Dale is a great guy on and off the field.  He does a great job of teaching kids not only how to be better football players, but  also does a great job teaching them character for after football for these young men.

Catholic Notes

RB Jeremy Stewart, who just finished at Stanford, has a chance to sign with a NFL team as soon as the lock out is over. Jeremy was a star Running Back at Catholic.

Former LSU Linebacker and McKinley High School football player Anthony Zehyoue is helping coach this year at Catholic High School, and will coach the Defensive Line. Anthony played Defensive Line at LSU.

Colleges that made their way to Catholic High School already this spring after talking to coach Weiner were Cornell, Tulane, LSU, ULL, McNeese State, Southern, Nicholls State, Southern Illinois, Arkansas State and University of Memphis to name just a few.

Athlete Grant Dubroc will be reporting to McNeese State for the fall in the 2011 class. Grant played Safety and WR for Catholic, but will play Wide Receiver at McNeese State. He’s a great late pick up for the Cowboys.

Two Catholic Bears from the 2011 class will Walk On to the LSU football team in the fall.  They are Offensive Lineman Adam White and Anthony Van Duzee.
