April 19, 2011 - There are kids who play football and look the part, and then there are kids like Daniel Megison from Dunham High School who looks the part and is a Football player. One of the biggest hidden gems in the state of Louisiana is LB Daniel Megison.

Daniel played Linebacker, and Tight End every game for 60 minutes with no break and no one going in for this kid for the whole season. He played hurt a few games because he is committed to the game of football. When this kid hits, you feel it. Daniel stands 6-2 in height and weighs a lean 225 pounds. Last year Daniel weighed in the 210 to 215 range. I feel like Middle Linebacker is perfect for this kid in college because he will be in the 235 to 240 range when he fills out and look like a Penn State Linebacker when done.  Collin Ellis, another former LB/RB from Dunham, will start for Northwestern in the Big 10 this year as a Redshirt Freshman, and I feel Daniel at this stage in high school has more of a LB body and will be just as good as Collin, because both kids are mean and both run in the 4.69 range in the forty.

If he gets a chance to get some rest on offense, I predict he will have tons of tackles and tons of knock out hits in 2011.  Daniel Megison carries a 3.4 GPA in the classroom and has a ACT score of a 23, and will be in the 24 or 25 range when done. Daniel recently threw the Discus 152 feet, which is only 6 feet off from a state best in his class 2A. He also throws the Shot Put. What is scary is this kid hasn’t even scratched his potential yet as a football player.  Daniel had at least 5 hits last year as a LB that give you the wow factor after seeing him play in person and on film.

I feel like because this kid reads and reacts, he’s tough, runs well, and is committed to football.  His future is big time as a LB for a bunch of DI schools. I saw 9 games last year that he played in and thought he was one of the best Middle Linebackers in the state of Louisiana for the 2012 class. I would not be surprised if first year coach Guy Mistretta has him play some FB in certain parts of the game to give the team some more moxy and toughness to a small but aggressive offensive line and a really good RB in Jordan Lange.

Daniel is set to go to Penn State’s camp, and they are very interested.  Mississippi State Tight Ends coach has talked to him twice, and former LSU offensive Coordinator now at Maryland, Gary Crowton, has talked to Daniel.  Also the University of Texas in Austin and several other schools in Louisiana and all over the United States have talked to him. He is wide open right now with his choices, and doesn’t mind playing outside of Louisiana.

Hope you enjoy the interview with talented writer Taylor Williams.

Interview by Taylor Williams

LAFM: When did you start playing football?

DM: My sophomore year of high school.

LAFM: That’s pretty recent.  Did you play other sports before that, and have you kept up with them?

DM: I played baseball before and had some knee injuries that kept me out of football, and I don’t play it anymore.  I still throw discus on the track team though.

LAFM: What are your current height, weight, and forty time?

DM: 6-foot-2, 220 pounds, and a 4.7.

LAFM: What strengths have you developed most since then, and what are you trying to improve most on?

DM: Well I’ve always liked working out; it comes easy for me, so strength is one on my plusses.  Agility, footwork, and just mobility in general are my weaknesses.

LAFM: Did you grow up in Louisiana, and do you prefer to stay close to home for your college ball?

DM: I did, and as an LSU fan, but I definitely want to branch out.

LAFM: Has anyone in your family ever played at the college level?

DM: Nope, I’ll be the first.

LAFM: So what schools are you most interested in?

DM: I’m mostly interested in ACC schools; another school I’d really like to go to is Penn State since it’s a good school academically.  I especially like Clemson and N.C. State, but if I had a dream school it would be North Carolina.

LAFM: You mentioned the importance of academics; have you thought about what you might major in?

DM: Honestly, I have no clue at this point.

LAFM: Have you been to any camps for these or any other schools yet?

DM: No, I haven’t been up there yet, just gotten letters.

LAFM: You go to a pretty small school and play both sides, so do you think you’d switch positions in college?

DM: Yeah, I played tight end on offense and will next year too, and I’ve gotten recruited as both [tight end and linebacker].

LAFM: Speaking of next year, what are some of your personal goals?

DM: I don’t really have too many personal goals; I just want the team to get better.  I mean it’d be nice to get bigger and stronger, but we were five and five last year and missed the playoffs.

LAFM: What about playing for your current head coach?

DM: He [Coach Joey Thibodeaux] actually retired this year after about 22 years; we have a new coach from Redemptorist.  They’re totally different coaches with totally different styles.

LAFM: Can you elaborate on that?

DM: Our new coach [Guy Mistretta] is a younger guy; plus we ran the Wing-T last year and now its more pro style.

LAFM: What do you like most about the game in terms of manning the middle linebacker position?

DM: Well, we had a guy before me who played middle linebacker and helped me learn it.  It’s like quarterbacking the defense, except you get to hit people, and I’m very pumped for that responsibility of it next year.

LAFM: What’s been the best game of your career thus far?

DM: Towards the ends of last season, there were four games on our schedule that were make and break.  They’re also our biggest games each year; I thought I played well in all of them but unfortunately we didn’t get the wins.
