Dash Duncan

April 12, 2011 - You don’t see many kids coming out of Louisiana or Baton Rouge that stand 6-4 in height as a QB, weigh 210, and throw for over 3,200 yards in a season with 34 Touchdowns.  Dash Duncan is a kid who had one of the greatest single seasons for a first time starter in 4A or 5A in my 25 years of following high school football in Louisiana.

What’s most impressive about this kid besides the stats and his size, is his ability to do this without one Wide Receiver over 5-8  in height last year, and to learn an offense  at a new school in less than 2 months for the start of the fall season coming over from University High Lab School.

The National guys are not ranking him higher because he only played one year, but what I say to that is who cares if he only played one year.  Check out what he did with a small offensive line for 4A standards and a quick but tiny core of Wide Receivers.  It’s scary to know what he can do with a DI Wide Receiver that has some height in college. Dash was also on a team that did not have a big time RB to hand off to, so the offense was basically all him making it go. Dash Duncan reminds me of an Eli Manning, Tom Brady, or even Peyton Manning type when it comes to being a pocket QB that’s super smart and has great touch on the football.  I’m not saying he’s Peyton Manning or those guys, but if you want a tall QB who can run your offense in college, pick it up very fast , and avoid sacks because his quick release then you need to sign this kid.

Dash has a release similar sometimes to that of an All Pro and possible future Canton, Ohio QB in Phillip Rivers of the San Diego Chargers.  Dash is 210 pounds now, but when he’s done filling out he will look very similar to Phillip Rivers (6-5, 240) and Peyton Manning in size (6-6, 235) and I predict 6-5, 230 or 240 when done.  I also like that he has learned from former LSU QB and NFL QB Tommy Hodson, who has really helped Dash with his release and feet and knowledge of playing the position over the last few years .

Last year Baton Rouge had two tall QBs who signed.  They were Stevie Douglas (6-4, 185) to Stephen F. Austin (he was committed to Memphis), and Zack Oliver (6-4, 230) to Northwestern of the Big 10 in Chicago. I think Dash is every bit as good as these two kids who will become great QB’s in college.

I hope you enjoy the following interview with Dash written by writer Taylor Williams.

Interview by Taylor Williams

Quarterback Dash Duncan from St. Michaels the Archangel was one of the most articulate, yet succinct players I interviewed all day.  Dash and his father Chris were amongst the first to arrive before hitting the road for another meeting in Lafayette.  No rest on this Sunday.

LAFM: What do you like most about football in terms of the quarterback position?

DD: The leadership aspect of the position, no question.   I like knowing how much of an impact I can have on any play, and the fact that the game starts and ends at the quarterback position.

LAFM: At what age did you start playing?

DD: At age six, in the Bob Morgan league.

LAFM: What’s it like playing for your current head coach?

DD: Coach Held is great; he ‘s really a big motivator and he inspires us to go out there before every game with a big speech, and our offensive coordinator was a great play-caller last year and helped us out a lot.

LAFM: What are your biggest strengths and weaknesses to work on as a player?

DD: I think accuracy has always been my biggest strength, and as far as improving is concerned; I’m mainly just trying to get faster and stronger in the offseason.

LAFM: What are your current height and weight?

DD: 6-foot-4, 210 pounds now, but I’ll be at 215 for the season.

LAFM: What’s your current forty time?

DD: If I had to do a straightaway sprint right now, it’d be about a 4.9

LAFM: Are you originally from LA, and if not, when did you move here?

DD: Yep, Baton Rouge

LAFM: Has anyone in your family ever played collegiate or professional sports, and if so, where?

DD: Most of my mom’s side of the family attended and played at Denham Springs, but nobody has ever played big-time football beyond the high school level.

LAFM: What were your favorite college and NFL teams growing up?

DD: LSU and Saints, that’s all we ever heard growing up.  And it’s probably the answer you’ll get to that question every time.

LAFM: Are there any guys on the team being recruited to the same schools?

DD: There are not too many guys on our team being recruited but we’ve got some good players and we’re going to surprise some people next year.

LAFM: What game do you enjoy the most, and why?

DD: Oh man, this year it was Woodlawn, but now they’ve moved up.  It’s hard to say now, but as the quarterback I have to get everybody fired up for every game.

LAFM: What’s been your most memorable moment as a player at this point in your career?

DD: Last year we lost be ten points in the first round (Haughton) and it was the closest we’d ever come to winning a playoff game; no banners at our school yet, the big thing is just getting a playoff win.

LAFM: What are you and your team’s goals for next season?

DD: To get deep in the playoffs, maybe to the State championship game, and from a personal standpoint, I’m hoping to throw for 3000 yards again.

LAFM: How important is it to play close to home for your family to see you?

DD: I think it’s pretty important, just like I think family itself is important, so I know they’d come support me wherever I go.

LAFM: What are your top choices for colleges?

DD: I’m still open to anyone who wants to throw an offer at me, but SMU and Vanderbilt are definitely at the top.

LAFM: What colleges have offered you for football already?

DD: No offers.  Yet.

LAFM: What camps have you been to and what camps are you planning to attend this summer?

DD: This year I’m definitely going to SMU, Vandy, LSU, maybe Oklahoma and some Ivy League schools.

LAFM: Would you change positions in college from high school?

DD: Probably just as a quarterback.

LAFM: What other sports do you play, and have you been recruited for them?

DD: Just football.

LAFM: What would you possibly major in at college?

DD: Pre-medicine.
