January 21, 2011 - I had a chance to talk to current head coach Nelson Stewart of Newman High School in New Orleans, LA before our TV Show in Baton Rouge, where he was a guest.
I asked Nelson Stewart about Athlete and current Newman football player Odell Beckham.
“It would not surprise me if Odell goes to LSU and plays early. He’s grown two inches in the last year and 20 pounds of muscle. He has great ball skills and is a very good route runner as a WR,” said Coach Stewart about Beckham’s ability.
I also asked Coach about why Beckham chose LSU.
He said, “Miami finished second and the coaching changes did not help there, and Tennessee was third. But LSU is where his dad played, and his mom Heather Van Norman was an All American Sprinter at LSU for the track team.”
Personally, I think this kid can play slot WR or Cornerback for LSU, because he has good hands and he can run. I remember Odell Beckham’s dad, Odell Beckham Sr. who was from powerhouse Marshall Texas High School, when he played at LSU. Senior was a highly recruited RB coming out of Texas in the 1980’s.
Tidbit
I was able to get an update from Nelson Stewart about another one of his former players, DB Ronnie Vinson who plays for LSU. Coach told me Ronnie played in LSU’s first 5 games, but broke his hand and will probably get a Medical Redshirt for his true freshman season. He was playing nickel back for LSU in 2010, and is up to 195 pounds now, from his 185-pound frame in High School. His bench press has gone up some 50 pounds to 300, since being at LSU.
