January 20, 2011 - I had a chance to meet with long time Head Coach Rick Gaille of St. James High School this week, and I really enjoyed talking football with one of Louisiana’s best High School Head Coaches.
I asked Coach about Alonzo Lewis, who’s committed to play for LSU, and he said, “Alonzo Lewis is now 6-4, 210 pounds and to me he’s a DI WR caliber with DB skills for college.”
Coach thinks he would make a better DB in college at FS, than at WR. I have to agree with him because he’s tall, but agile and can cover space, and with this size he can get in the 215 - 220 range and not lose any of his 4.5 speed in the forty. I compare him to LSU freshman Tharold Simon (6-3, 205) from Eunice High School, who had a great freshman season this year. Simon played WR and DB at Eunice, prior to going to LSU.
This kid has a great vertical from seeing him play a few times, and will hit you at all times and covers a lot of ground very fast.
Tidbits
Coach Gaille told me former St. James QB Corey Webster’s (who plays for the New York Giants) mom still works at the school, and Chad Jasmin, former Clemson RB and close friend, who played with Corey is working with Corey in New York . Corey moved to Cornerback at LSU, and the rest is history. I remember seeing Corey play basketball at St. James and he was offered several DI scholarships in that sport as well but chose football. I think he made a great decision.
