November 16, 2010 - In Saturday evening's Soutland conference “battle of NSU” rivralry game,the old saying “when these two teams get together you can throw the records out” prove to be a very true statement. The Nicholls State Colonels shocked a red hot Northwestern State demons team 37-7 in Turpin Stadium with an outstanding Defensive effort sparked by four interceptions that turned into 21 points, while holding the Demons to just 254 yards of total offense. The Colonels (3-7, 2-4 Southland) halted a three game losing streak while ending the Demons (5-5, 4-2 Southland) four game winning streak in convincing fashion.
Sophomore quarterback LaQuinitn Caston had four total touchdowns – three rushing and one passing. Caston put the first points on the board with 39 yard touchdown rush with 8:39 to play in the first to put Nicholls ahead 7-0, after one of the Demons four interceptions. The Colonels only had to go 2 yards as Caston took it in from 2 yards out on the third play to take a commanding 14-0 only 6 minutes into the game. Early in the second Nicholls would put together a 8 plays, 69 yards drive capped by Caston's third touchdown run; this one from 22 yards out and with still 10:59 to play in quarter two. The last place Colonels were up 21-0 over the then first place Demons on the road. Northwestern State needing to make something happen, and would strike quick going 4 plays, 74 yards drive which would culminate with a Paul Harris 20 yard hook-up with Justin Aldredge cutting the deflict to 21-7 with 8:34 to play in the half.
Midway through the third, Nicholls would put the final dagger in the demons driving only 41 yards after another interception. Caston would toss his first touchdown of the today to go along with three rushing T.D as he connects from 7 yards out with Kenyad Blair making it a 28-7 lead. Colonels had a safety in the fourth from Shawn Elrod and after the Defense collected their fourth Interception of the day Dalton Hilliard added 12 yd T.D rush to close out the scoring at 37-7. Thursday Nicholls will close out there season hosting Southeastern Louisiana in the “River Bell Classic." Northwestern State visit league leader Stephen F. Austin!
