October 21, 2010 - If St. Mary’s High School keeps playing defense like they have been, the old adage will surely hold true.

A major contributor to the Tiger’s stout defense is 6’4”, 180-pound linebacker Chris Cryer.

The senior has helped lead the team to an impressive 7-0 start, which has allowed double digit opponent point totals only twice this season.

“On defense you play with passion,” Cryer said. “Defense wins championships. You’ve got to believe that no one can gain a yard on you.”

The long-time Saints fan has attended a couple of camps in recent years to hone his skills, including a McNeese State camp and a Northwestern camp.

Cryer, who runs a 4.9 forty, benches 195, squats 375 and cleans 225, said a few local schools top his college list at the moment.

“Northwestern is very interested in me right now, so there’s a good chance I go there,” he said. “The coach is wonderful. He’s a great recruiter and he knows how to win games. It’s a great program.”

The 7-0 start is only the beginning for the Tigers. Cryer said one of the toughest matches of the season is already behind them.

“Block was a big game for us last weekened,” Cryer said.

St. Mary’s defeated their district rival 24-7 in that scuffle.

Cryer said he has a visit lined up with Northwestern in upcoming weeks.
