September 30, 2010 - It’s difficult for a high school football player to be ready to play one position, let alone three.  That’s the difficult task for Jarmon Coleman of Scotlandville High School.

Scotlandville opened the season 1-3, but without Coleman there might be a goose egg in the win column.  The 5-10, 200-pound senior plays strong safety, fullback, and even kicker.  The versatile Coleman likes to pattern his play after a famous NFL player.

“Ray Lewis,” Coleman said of his favorite player.  “He steps up and gets the defense pumped.  He’s the leader of the team.  That’s how I want to be.  The way he tackles, he runs right through people.  I want to be like him.”

Through four games, Coleman amassed one interception, one forced fumble, one recovered fumble, and roughly 30 tackles.

Off the field Coleman works hard, too.  He said he benched 325, squatted 565, and power cleaned 275 this summer.  Those are impressive numbers for a high school player.  Coleman is a “yes, sir” and “no, sir” kind of guy.  As a rule, those are the types of young men that one should expect to do well in the weight room.

To earn the opportunity to play in college, Coleman is open to playing just about anything.  Coleman said of his college position, “Wherever coach wants to play me.”  He anticipates playing linebacker, running back or fullback, but that’s far from a certainty.

When asked to describe his style of play, Coleman replied, “Wise, quick, and strong.  A wild-man.  Very athletic because I can any position that the coach places me at.”

Still, more improvement will be needed.  “Coverage,” Coleman said of the area that needs the most improvement.  “This is my first year playing man-on-man a lot.”

Coleman received mail from several schools, but he’s not sure where he stands with his recruitment right now.  He’s wide open.  Purdue, TX, UF, FL, Miami, LSU, ULM, MS ST, TN, and Texas Tech sent mail to date.  Coleman established a 2.7 GPA.

Some college football program will land a good football player and good person in Jarmon Coleman.
