by Eric Brown

September 3, 2010 - Northeast High School was established in 1981 from the consolidation of Pride High School and Chaneyville High School. Northeast is Located in Pride, La right outside of Zachary in East Baton Rouge Parish. I recently had a chance to visit Northeast High School and met with Head Coach David Masterson and some of his staff, and say in on a practice. Coach Masterson has been coaching in the state of Louisiana for years, including being an assistant at Louisiana Monroe where he coached Quarterback Stan Humphries who had a nine year NFL career with the San Diego Chargers and the Washington Redskins, and started a superbowl for the Chargers.  More recently Masterson coached four years at Northeast, four years at Tara high, and is  back at Northeast for now ten seasons.

Northeast is a very solid football program and as always taught discipline and hard work, and I could tell that based on the attitudes of the players at Practice.  There was no Complaining.  I saw a sign in the Northeast lockeroom that read "It's better to had died as a young boy than to fumble the football" and that really says it all. If football was all about speed, Northeast would never lose a game.  They won the state championship in track and has many track athletes on there football team.

Northeast of course produced former LSU standout and now Houston Texan Trindon Holiday, one of the fastest guys on the planet.  Northeast has two of Trindon Holiday's brothers on the current team. Junior RB/LB Damonte Richardson at 5'8, 220 had 75 tackles and 2 sacks a year ago and JR Reginald Richardson 5'10, 150 also played Baseball as a catcher, batted 460 with 2 Homeruns and both also ran track like there older Brother. Other guys to watchout for who were also part of the state champion track team are SR RB Leroy Williams who runs 4.47, sophomore WR Patrick Rivers who also plays Baseball, JR Jarvis Houston also plays Basketball, JR WR/S Markell Morris, and JR Jalen Snowden who runs 4.6.  This is a team with a ton speed.  They have only 28 players out, but Coach Masterson assured me every play they will give 100% in a brutal 3A district.  Northeast will improve this year, but in order for them to make playoff push, they need to pull an upset or two and with there speed and hard work it can happen.
