Neil Weiner
Head Coach Neil Weiner

August 18, 2010 - Zachary High School is Located in Zachary about 15 miles north of Baton Rouge in East Baton Rouge parish, but it's not part of the East Baton Rouge school district. I recently had a chance to visit Zachary High school and head Coach Neil Weiner, the son of Catholic High coach Dale Weiner, the winnest coach in the Baton Rouge area.  Coaching is definitely in their blood line.

Coach Neil Weiner got his coaching start at Catholic High of Pointe Coupee, just like his dad.  Weiner coached there and served as the Athletic Director for four years, which included a 2006 undefeated regular season, and a trip to the state quarterfinals. Weiner coached one year at Central High as an assistant to Sid Edwards, which helped get his feet wet, going from 1A to 5A. Last season was Weiner's first season with Zachary High School.  They finished 3-7, 3-3 in district. Coach talked to me about the improvement during the course of the season after a 0-5 start, in which a new offense was installed.  A lot of guys had to get use to it.  They averaged around five turnovers a game during those first five games. The Broncos finished 3-2, but this year they are expected by many to compete in this district.

Zachary has maybe the best High School Football Facilities in the state of Louisiana.  A beautiful field turf, weight room, locker rooms and meeting rooms were all built in the past four years. The Broncos have 99 players out for the football team.  Coach Weiner did a little team buliting last this summer.  He took his team on a mandatory team boot camp in Carville, Louisiana to the Louisiana National guard base.  He told me it was a great chance to bring the guys closer together in a setting in which they stayed together as a team and really got to know each other better. Some the guys coach told me about that he is expecting big things out of are the following: QB Mason Pace (junior),DL Taylor Mayeaux, FS Byron Stevens,WR/SS Dylan Beard, and Byron John.  OL Ethan Downs is a big key to the Offensive line.  The Broncos had a very solid spring.  There's a lot of depth and a year of experience under Neil Weiner's new Offense.  I'm expecting big Improvement as well. I truly enjoyed my trip to Zachary.  Coach Neil Weiner Is a great young coach and looking at those athletics, I'm confident I will see this Zachary team in the post season for years to come.
