August 12, 2010 - Edna Karr High School is full of leaders. The team showed they compete while making a run deep into the playoffs last season.
One of these sure-fired leaders is senior, Matthew Bailey.
Bailey may not be the biggest man on the field, standing only 5 foot 10 and weighing in at 190. But whatever Bailey lacks in size, he makes up for in the weight room. The safety turned athlete already benches an impressive 335 lbs, squats 415 lbs and cleans 265. Not to mention is natural speed, running the forty yard dash in 4.5 seconds.
Bailey doesn’t play any other sports at Edna Karr, focusing primarily on football.
“I like the intensity of it,” he said, “and the contact.”
Bailey is being recruited by colleges as an athlete, and has offers from several different universities, including North Texas, Northern Illinois, Tulane and Virginia.
Despite the offers from these programs, one of the schools at the top of his list is Southern Mississippi.
“I know a lot players that graduated from Karr and went there,” Bailey said. “Its’ a great program and I’d love to be a part of that program.”
But before Bailey can suit up in a college uniform, he must take care of business in high school.
Helping lead his team to an 11-2 record last year, Bailey has tons of game experience and playoff experience. Having had the opportunity to play against numerous opponents, Bailey said his favorite to play is rival, O. Perry Walker.
But it’s not all business for Bailey. He also loves to vacation.
“I like to go to Florida,” he said, “and go to all the beaches out there.”
Bailey is also a big time New Orleans Saints fan and was thrilled to see them win their first Super Bowl this year.
“I was ecstatic,” he said. “I loved everything about it.”
