Broadmoor Head Coach Rusty Price

August 4, 2010 - Broadmoor High School was founded in 1960 and is located Baton Rouge. Broadmoor is home of the annual highly publicized Broadmoor Arts and Crafts Festival held on campus every November, at that event people from all across the country come to sell and buy various arts and foods. Students also work and sell food to raise funds for different school organizations, and volunteer time.

The Broadmoor Athletic program has a great tradition; I got to visit some of the coaches, many of which were there in 2000 when I was a Buccaneer. Broadmoor had a really successful Baseball and Football program together in the late 90’s, and there were lot athletes who played both. I visited with Defensive Backs coach and long time former Broadmoor Baseball coach Keith Hill. We talked about Guys like Ryan Theriot former Buccaneer star and former Chicago Cub recently traded to the L.A Dodgers; Ryan Richard a former all state Quarterback and Pitcher who played college baseball at the University of San Diego and had Major League potential before injuring his shoulder; Michael Woods former Wide Receiver, Southern University standout second baseman who played a few years in the minors; Trae Duncan former Quarterback and LSU baseball player who had a stint with the Tampa Bay Rays; and WR/DB Brad Franklin who played college at University Louisiana Lafayette and played for three NFL teams’ (Panthers, Jaguars and Seahawks) and three CFL teams.

Coach Rusty is in his 36th year at Broadmoor. The 27th Head Coach is always optimistic about his team. The Bucs finished 0-10 a year ago and again have small numbers. Broadmoor went into the summer with 36 players, a few have transferred and about 14 guys have been coming to summer workouts. Coach Price is hoping for 25 players when the season starts. Broadmoor Back in the early 90’s beat powerhouse John Curtis Twice, and lost to Salmen in the state title game in 1992. Right now, the Bucs can use some of the magic of guys like Bucky Richardson, who played college at Texas A&M and the NFL’s Houston Oilers and Allen Stansberry, a former LSU star. They are seeking their first winning season since 2005. In 1997 Broadmoor went 13-1 to the state semi, since then there has been a lot of struggle. I know Coach Rusty Price pretty well. I went through some of those practices as a freshman and I know you got to be tough to make it at Broadmoor. They may have 14 players, but they will play hard every down because with Rusty Price, there is no other way. Coach Price at 63 years old still bikes 10-15 miles a few days every week and is still strong as a bull, so I can’t promise them wins, but the fight will be there. Coach Price is excited about Davion Jones playing quarterback in his first year coming out. The Bucs have to replace their Quarterback and Running back from a year ago. It’s always fun to go back to your alma mater and see the great coaches again.
