July 14, 2010 - Every year in Louisiana you look for Defensive Tackles for college coaches, or you just look for those that can play DIV 1. Usually, at the end of the day, I might see two or three linemen for the defensive side of the ball, in this great state of ours, every year that can play DIV 1 High football. What I mean by that is a kid that has everything a coach looks for in height, size, speed, strength, and toughness for BCS schools. Now, I see 25 to 30 kids a year that are under 6-2 and don’t run as fast, but they’re tough, they’re mean, and they’re leaders that bring their lunch box to practice and games every week.
John Bertucci is in that top 25. He’s got all the football stuff you look for. He’s mean, tough, strong, and a leader, but he’s not the tallest and not the fastest. The smart Div 1 coaches will take a chance on a kid like this, and they look back and say, “Wow, this guy was a leader in the locker room and was the stone of my defense.” Last season, John had 56 tackles and 8 sacks. John is strong. He squats 450, benches 360, and cleans 300. He is also a wrestling heavyweight champ in high school wrestling. John Bertucci stands 6-1 and weighs 260. I like watching kids like this play, because football was made for kids like this who also give high effort every play.
John’s top college choices given to Louisiana Football Magazine are, in order, Boise State, TCU, LSU, Air Force, ULL, and Southeastern.
