Theltus Cobbins

July 1, 2010 - I remember five years ago I went to a McDonogh 35 practice in the scorching heat and I saw this young Freshman QB rotating with another QB, getting ready for the season in early fall.  That kids name was Theltus Cobbins, who is 6-1, 190 pounds now, but back then he was a skinny 5-10 to 5-11, 160 pound kid running around, making people miss, and learning how to throw a football.  Cobbins was only in the 8th grade then and was playing in every 4A varsity game.

You could tell the kid had great athletic ability, but was a young pup trying to lead a team in a tough 4A district in New Orleans.  I tell people all the time that the beautiful thing about recruiting is seeing a young man in the early years in high school, when they are not finished products or, let’s say, look the part yet, and they become prospects, and grow into big time players like Cobbins has.

Cobbins now is tall, lean, but muscle lean, has great touch on the football, and seems very comfortable running the offense, which has a ton of speed around him too. Cobbins is currently committed to the University of Kentucky in the SEC.  My prediction is Cobbins worst case scenario is he goes to Kentucky, Redshirts, comes back at QB or can be moved to WR or FS, and be in the NFL in 5 years.  Best case scenario is he’ll be the starting QB for Kentucky in two years.

Theltus Cobbins runs a true 4.5 forty, and what I like about this kid that you see when you watch him play, is he’s so athletic with the ball in his hands running, and that’s what colleges are looking for these days - kids who can escape the rush and throw when needed.  His arm is now catching up to his feet, and that makes him a very dangerous QB.

Cobbins is a really good student.  He has an ACT of 21 and a GPA of 2.7.  He’s also very strong for a QB, cleaning 200 pounds.  Cobbins has timed 10.8 in the 100 meters so you can see he’s a big time athlete.  He ran 200 meters in 22 flat and 400 in 49.0.  He won state with the indoor relay team in 2010 in track.
