June 30, 2010 - University High started in 1915, and is currently located on LSU campus as a Laboratory school to the Louisiana State School system. University is currently ranked in the top 100 high schools overall in academics in the United States. That’s pretty impressive considering there are thousands of high schools in the United States.

I was able to go to University High around the weight room summer workouts of the team. New Head Coach Chad Mahaffey who came over from Central High School, and coached with Dale Weiner at Catholic High School wasn’t at the school, and was on vacation. Burke Broussard, a veteran coach entering his 13th season at University High, was there to help me with the kids and their jerseys to take pictures. Burke is a great guy and you can tell he loves coaching these young men. Burke is a Crowley High School Gent grad of 1981, and played for the Legend coach Willard Hanks, who was the head coach for Acadiana High School in Lafayette for many years.

University High School under the direction of new Head Coach Chad Mahaffey will return some really good skill players and lineman for the 2010 season. I was able to meet almost all of the 22 starters and came away very impressed. The kid that stands out to me on the team as a senior is LB Conner Miller, who stands 5-10, 205 pounds. Conner hits like he loves the game, and has great football IQ, meaning he reads and makes tackles sideline to sideline. This kid plays like he’s 6-2, 230 pounds, and his attitude to coach is great. Conner throws the Javelin 175 feet, which was second in the state of Louisiana. He has a 20 ACT and a 3.4 GPA.
I met two brothers, WR Steve Monk and WR/DB Donald Monk, that day and I need to ask the readers if they’ve ever meet two twin brothers who both have over a 4.0 GPA and both play WR for the same team. Steve Monk has a 5.0 GPA and an ACT of 35 and Donald has an ACT of 28 and a 4.2 GPA. Can you say the word Wow! That’s very impressive!

I would like to thank Coach Mahaffey and Coach Broussard for helping me set this up for the players. I will have more on University High and some of the others players in the football preview that you can order off the site.
Notes: University High School is the only school in Louisiana that offers an International Baccalaureate program, which allows students from University High to go to any college in the world. I talked to coach Broussard and about 20 kids a year from University go through this program.
