June 25, 2010 - Huntington is a magnet school in Shreveport with currently 1,110 students from 9th to 12th grade, with a lot of history in sports programs.  I was able to go by the school and meet with Head Football Coach Anthony McClain and his top players.

Here are some notable players to come out of the program.  Albert Belle, one of the top power hitters of all time in Major League Baseball, and he also played for LSU.  A lot of people don’t know this, but Albert was an Eagle Scout growing up, and he also played football at Huntington.  Albert, if you can believe this, was not drafted out of high school.  Another notable player is WR Troy Edwards (5-10, 195), who played at LA Tech and 7 years in the NFL. Troy was 1st Round draft pick to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1999.

Troy played in the NFL from 1999 to 2006, and once had a single game NCAA record of 21 catches for 400 yards in a season opener to Nebraska. That season Troy had 140 catches in one year, 1996 yards, and 27 TD’s at LA Tech.  Kenny Davidson, DE from LSU, went in Round 2 to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1990, and played in the NFL until 1996. Kenny was known for running a true 4.7 forty at 6-5, 272 pounds out of LSU.

The next star to come out of Huntington is Jarrett Fobbs (5-11, 190), who signed with LSU, and will be an impact player for them in many ways in 2010.  I thought this kid was the best athlete in the state last year, and, yes, over Trovon Reed of Thibodeaux High School. Jarrett was incredible for Huntington in 2009 making catches and moves you can’t coach.  He’s a Percy Harvin type in build, movement, and toughness.

Desmon Ethridge
WR/DB Desmon Ethridge

Anthony McClain did a really great job with these kids in just a little over a year and a half.  There’s another Div 1 player coming out of the program in 2010, and his name is Desmon Ethridge, who plays WR and DB. Desmon is 6-0 tall and weighs 185 pounds, and runs a smooth 4.6 forty.  He can play WR or SS in college for the big boy programs. He had 55 Catches for 680 yards, 6 TD’s, and lead the team in tackles with 82 all in 2009. That’s impressive stats for a kid to play a whole game in 4A ball in just one season.

Elliot Jones
QB Elliott Jones

The QB Elliott Jones looks like a LB in person, and he’s all of 6-0 tall and 230 pounds, but has a cannon arm and is tough to bring down.  Elliot was impressive to talk to, always smiling and a nice kid and very mature.  Jones is a Soft Commitment to Pine Bluff, Arkansas in Baseball.  This kid should throw for over 2,500 yards in 2010.  Last year he split time with another QB, and he threw for 1,772 yards and 10 TDS.

I would like to thank Coach McClain for letting me meet all the starters, and take pictures of the kids. I enjoyed my time at the school, and think the team has a chance to be very good again in 2010.

Notes: DT Sirderrick Landreth (6-2, 330) has a chance to start this year for Grambling College.  Landreth was a 4 year starter for Huntington High School.  This kid is massive in size, and not much fat at 330 pounds.

WR Reshad Douglas (6-3, 205) is competing for a starting position at Southeastern College in Hammond, LA.  Reshad put on some muscle weight and runs very well.  He should be an impact player for the Lions for a few years.  Douglas is also an Alum of Huntington High School.
