| Tyler Porter |
June 15, 2010 - I had a chance to film Northside the last two years, and noticed a kid by the name of Tyler Porter, who seemed to be everywhere at all times on every play in 2009. Tyler is listed at 6-0 to 6-1, but in person he’s more like 5-10 and weighs around 297 pounds. Tyler makes plays sideline to sideline and off the snap of the ball and he’s super quick. Tyler had 127 tackles as a DT in 2009, which is unheard of in high school or college football or a big guy on the defensive line. Tyler Porter also had 25 tackles behind the line, 4 fumble recoveries, and 2 TD’s off fumble recoveries. This kid is a football player whose height you have to forget, and realize he can play the game better than most Defensive Tackles over 6-1 in height.
Tyler has so much strength in his legs (He can squat 565 pounds) and power in his upper body (385 bench press), and get this, he Cleans 335 pounds. How many high school kids do you know that can bench over 350, Squat over 550, and clean over 300? I don’t know very many, that can do all three. This kid has an ACT score of an 18 and a GPA of 3.1 in the classroom. Tyler also throws the shot put 47.5 feet. You can tell Tyler is a leader while talking to him in person, and he’s very mature, which college coaches look for in a kid.
If I’m a IAA college football coach I would be all over this kid for a scholarship. I would say most Defensive Tackles in IAA football are usually in the 5-11 to 6-0 foot tall range. Tyler is better than most of the IAA tackles I saw play last year. It would not surprise me if a DIV 1 coach takes a chance on him in the end for a scholarship. Tyler is perfect for the nose guard position, and would eat up most centers in college football. I talked about his strength, and quickness off ball, but his effort is off the charts for a big guy in high school. This kid takes very few plays off, if any, every down on a Friday night in Lafayette.
