| Evan Tatford |
June 3, 2010 - I had a chance to go to a spring game a few weeks ago and watch who I think is the number 1 Tight End in the State of Louisiana - Evan Tatford. Evan stands a true 6-5, not 6-3, but 6-5, and maybe some change. He weighs a very lean 225 pounds and runs a really smooth 4.7 forty. Evan‘s family has football in their blood. His two brothers and his dad all played college football. Evan carries a 4.0 GPA and has a very high ACT.
Let me tell you why this kid is the # 1 tight end in the state. Evan has great hands, which is very rare for big guy who plays high school football. You very rarely see a tight end coming out of high school that catches everything in his path like this kid. The second reason is he knows the game of football. When I watch this kid run routes I see a kid who has a feel for where the ball will be thrown before it leaves the QB’s hands. Evan will come back to the ball if it’s under thrown and make every effort to catch it.
Let me ask the fan reading this, how many tight ends do you watch in high school do this? The third reason is he’s very smart, and what he will be able to do is block in college once he fills out like most kids do in college. Evan is a lean 225, and because he’s so tall he will get up to 250 easy, and by the time he plays in the NFL he’ll be up to 260. I’ve seen all his brothers play that were anywhere from 6-3 to 6-5, and he’s the best of the bunch. There’s a school in Baton Rouge called LSU, which only has one tight end right now that’s better than this kid and that’s DeAngelo Peterson. Evan could be better than DeAngelo by the time he’s a junior in college. I’ve watched high school football in Louisiana over 22 years and he’s got some of the best hands of a big guy I’ve seen since Robert Royal, who came out of Edna Karr few years ago, and by the way is a star with the Cleveland Browns. Robert was 6-5 and weighed 225 coming out of high school. Reason four is in the open field he looks faster than his forty time, meaning when he catches the ball he doesn’t go to the ground he runs up field. How many tight ends do you see barely catch balls, then stumble to the ground after a catch even in the NFL?
Evan is being recruited hard by Texas A&M and offered by Tulane and a few others. LSU hasn’t offered or recruited hard to this point.
