Lee with Evangel Head Coach Phillip Deas

May 31, 2010 - I remember my first trip and visit to Evangel High School some 16 years ago when I met a QB for Evangel at the time. His name was Phillip Deas, who later signed with Mack Brown, head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels at the time, and finished at Louisiana Tech in Ruston. I remember meeting Byron Dawson, DT for Evangel, a few years later who went on to become a ALL SEC DT for Nick Saban and LSU.

To let you know how time flies when you’re having fun covering high school football in Louisiana, these two football players are now coaches at their old high school. Phillip Deas is now the head football coach for Evangel Christian, and Byron Dawson is the Defensive Coordinator for Evangel. This will be Phillip Deas first year as a head football coach for Evangel Christian. Another former teammate of Phillip Deas will help out with the staff is former All American DB Phillip Geiggar who went to UT in Austin and was a very good player for them. I still think Phillip is one of the best High School DB’s, I ever saw play the game in Louisiana over my 20 plus years.

The staff is mostly new with the exception of Byron Dawson and Phillip Geiggar returning from last year. Another new coach I had a chance to meet was Ron Lynch who comes from the state of Texas where he coached LSU signee from the 2009 recruiting class, LB Luke Muncie at Klein Oak HS. Ron also coached ALL PRO OT Tony Ugho (6-4, 310) of the Indianapolis Colts in the NFL and played for Ron at Houston Westfield HS. Ron was also the Head Football coach at Deer Park a powerful Texas program. Ron is a very impressive guy, who has a ton of experience with great players and big high school games.

Evangel lost a lot of talent from the 2009 State Championship team, but from what I saw, they will surprise and contend with a bunch of new players, and some key returning players that were back ups in 2009. I like the staff, and even though there are many new faces, most of these coaches played for the School, and know the history, and what it takes to get back.

I had a chance to sit in with the team while they lifted weights one early morning, and let me tell you one thing, these guys are strong. Byron Dawson who is in charge of the weight lifting runs a tight program. These guys lift hard and don’t stop when they hit the weight room. I saw many players lifting weights twice their size in stature. You see why these guys are so ready by just watching the commitment they give in the off-season program.

QB David Dee Duron

QB David Dee Duron returns for his senior season. He passed for 3,550 yards, 50 TD’s, and only 7 interceptions in 2009. DE Jermauria Rasco (6-3, 250) also returns for his senior season. He had 109 tackles and 12.5 sacks in 2009 season. Rasco in person looks like he’s only 230 pounds, but he’s so lean in stature. I really think this kid could move to LB in college and be a Brandon Spikes (Florida Gators) type of player in speed and similar movement. I talked to Rasco and it would not surprise me if he signs on signing day, to see what college coaches are staying and going in this crazy world of recruiting. Rasco is a very smart kid who works hard in the weight room, and will be even better in college.

DE Jermauria Rasco

This team doesn’t have the depth in numbers on offense and defense, but when you have Rasco on defense and Duron on offense, they will still be tough to beat. I like the upside of some of the new players coming out this fall for Evangel Christian. There are some really young and talented players coming up that will see their first time playing football at the school.

I would like to thank Coaches Byron Dawson and Phillip Deas for letting me talk to the team and spend the day at the school. It was good seeing these young coaches because like I said in the story earlier, I remember these guys when they where in high school. Deas will make a very good head coach, and Dawson is one of the top young Defensive Line coaches in America.

Notes: I was able to run into Texas A&M signee for 2009, DE Brandon Jackson, who stands 6-4 right now and weighs 293 pounds. Brandon was outside the Evangel stadium training on his own to get ready for this up coming fall season for football as a true freshman. Brandon said he will get down to 270 for August when he reports. Brandon was on my TV show this past fall, and in my opinion he’s the most mature high school football player I’ve ever meet in my life talking to him one own one. Every time I have a conversation with this kid it feels like I’m talking to a 30 year old. Brandon will play this year and it would not shock me if he becomes an ALL Conference player for them because of his hard work and smarts. LSU did not recruit this kid hard until late in recruiting. Brandon was committed to Arkansas for a long time, but signed with Texas A&M. This is a kid that got away. Remember his name. How many 17 year old kids do you know that are out of high school and running bleachers with no one pushing him alone at 7:45 in the morning. Brandon told me he will probably room with two other Louisiana signees, DE Gavin Stansberry and DE Ivan Robinson. These three players are all lineman and could all make it in the NFL one day. I filmed these kids for three years and Louisiana schools lost three great players to Texas A&M.
