January 8, 2009 - There are two types are Fullbacks when it comes to college football; blockers, and those that can run and block. It’s usually not as hard to find a powerful blocker coming out of High School, but it always seems to be a challenge to find someone like a Jacob Hester, 5-11 225, who played at Evangel Christian HS, LSU, and now currently the San Diego Chargers. Hester had the quickness of great backs, with vision, heart, and power all wrapped into one. I remember watching Jerald Sowell, 6-1 230 pounds, play QB for Baker HS in the early 1990’s. He went on to sign with Tulane where he moved to FB, and played many years in the NFL.
The three best Fullbacks I ever saw play High School ball in Louisiana that converted to FB in college were Jacob Hester, Evangel Christian HS, Jerald Sowell, Baker HS, and Jamie Spencer, who played at Ouachita HS in Monroe. Spencer was a Parade ALL American, as a RB, when he signed with Notre Dame in South Bend, and then moved to FB at 6-1 250 pounds. The Toughest FB pound for pound was a kid named Kevin Steltz, 5-8 240 pounds, from Archbishop Rummell in New Orleans. Kevin walked on to LSU and helped them to a National Championship in 2003 where he blocked for RB Justin Vincent and Joseph Addai currently with the Colts in the NFL.
Let’s take a look at the best Fullbacks and sleepers coming out in the 2010 class for Louisiana.
The best Fullback, that I saw all year in Louisiana, with speed, quickness, and toughness to block, was a kid named Joshua Perry from Edna Karr HS. He's 5-10, 220 pounds of muscle with great strength. He's powerful and can break runs. Perry played RB at Edna Karr HS on the Westbank of New Orleans, and was over shadowed by a big time DI / QB, several DI players at WR, and a huge Offensive line. Joshua did not get to carry the ball 15 to 20 times a game, but if he did, wow the stats this kid could have put up! The team did not need him to carry them as, again, he was one of many stars. This kid will make a lot of college coaches very smart if he moves to Fullback in College and gets the chance at the DI level. Perry could be scary in Subdivision one, formally called IAA.
The strongest and hardest hitter playing Fullback this year was Justin Young, 5-10 225, from Richwood HS in Monroe. I saw Justin in a camp over the summer in Monroe. Justin is built like a NFL Fullback right now. Watching film of this kid, he was stud hitting people as a blocker and a LB for his team. Justin Young is a man child, and would make a great blocking fullback for any DI school. Justin can squat over 500 pounds, and if you saw his legs you would believe it.
Demarko Baldwin, 6-1 225, from Archbishop Shaw HS, played Tight End for most of his career and actually started since his sophomore season as a Tight End. However as a senior, he got a chance to play some FB, and wow this kid looked really good! Baldwin is too small to play TE for a DI program, but if moved to Fullback, he can really be effective. He has good feet, and room to get bigger. He could weigh 240 when done for his frame in college. I like his effort and that he’s aggressive.
Cedrico Pollard, 5-11 215, from Neville HS, has power, good speed, and is very quick for a big guy. Pollard has no fear when he hits the hole while running the ball, and he can surprise you with a burst of speed outside. Pollard could weigh between 230 and 240 pounds in college. The only drawback is his grades. They need to improve or he might have to go to a Junior College or sign with a smaller school and sit out his freshman season. I like this kid a lot, and think his future is bright, if he goes to the right system.
The best Fullback I saw in Shreveport this year was Albert Robinson, 6-1 210, from Airline HS. This kid has really good hips, and can run with the ball in his hands. The team had some really good RB's, but if needed this kid could have been the starting RB for Airline HS. Robinson has a nice mix of quickness, power, and speed. This kid is a very lean 210, and could weigh in the 240 range easily in two years for college.

Patrick Tobias, 6-0 225, from John McDonough, was everything to his team. He played RB and LB the whole game, with no rest, and boy does this kid look like a big timer at times. It's scary to see how good he could be if he did not have to play defense the whole game. Tobias sometimes runs like he’s a talented true RB, but I can see this kid as a Fullback, in the right system. He has the ability to block and break runs because he has great feet for a big guy. He hops and changes direction very well for a 225 pound back. I would say from a raw stand point might be the best Fullback in Louisiana. Patrick Tobias easily could be 240 in college, and run 4.6 in the forty. He has the build and body of an Eddie Lacey from Dutchtown HS and currently Alabama. Tobias could be a true RB in the right one back system. There’s no telling how good he can be in a good weight program, where he does not have to play both ways like he did in High School.
