Grant Venable

May 13, 2010 - I really enjoyed sitting down and talking to Head Football Coach Dale Weiner, considering he teaches all day and has college coaches coming to the school all day long this time of year. I was able to run into College Coaches from Southern Illinois, Travis Stepps and Coach Reinbold from SMU in Dallas, TX. These two coaches are hitting the whole state of Louisiana.

This is the time of year where all your college coaches try and look at the kids they get tapes from or hit schools that usually have players for college in the big month of May. I like watching kids in group drills because you can see effort, strength and feet with all positions. It also gives you a chance to see size and height close up. QB Zach Oliver, who stands 6-3 and some change, weighs in at 225. He has a cannon for an arm, and looks more athletic than a year ago. Northwestern of Chicago offered him a few weeks back, and they were in town again to see more of Zach this week for practice. Also in town was Gus Malzohn from Auburn. I feel like Zach is a special QB who can play for anybody in the United States. If Zach had the Star RB to go with his arm I don’t know if you would beat Catholic. It would be scary if a player of the caliber of Travis Minor or a Warrick Dunn was in the Catholic backfield with this QB. Grant Venable, a DE for the team, but I think a MLB for college, is a tough aggressive kid who has very good speed on the outside. It was fun watching a young sophomore DT who goes 6-3 about 280 pounds and Grant go at it in one own one drills in practice. Grant overpowered this young DT. It just goes to show you the toughness of a kid going up against a 280 pound DT who will sign a Division 1 Scholarship one day. Grant showed me in practice his first step off the ball is really special. This kid will run through a wall to tackle someone. Grant Venable is 6-0, 228 pounds and to me a Div 1 prospect for the right school. He’s also one of the top Discus throwers in 5-A ball. Grant has a 23 ACT and qualified for college. He’s another rare starter since his sophomore year as a DE in this tough 5 A district.

On offense I’m amazed by how Grant Dubroc is playing both defense and offense in practice to get ready for the season. Grant in drills showed really good hands, and ran good routes. Those are the two things recruiters most over look these days is a kid actually catching a ball and running routes to separate. Most college coaches are too caught up in the size and combined stats. Grant goes 5-10, 175 pounds, but can run a legit 4.5 forty. He goes 34 plays on offense in practice and rest on defense, and plays on the Baseball team. Give this kid some Gatorade for his effort. He’s a FS for college or Slot back WR. I really believe Grant would be a great steal for a in state IAA school, and if given a chance by the time the season is over it would not surprise me if he shows colleges his WR skills this year. He mostly played DB in 2009. Grant is already qualified for college.

DT Lance Callihan (6-3, 290) is a big raw good looking kid, that looks great in practice, but I fell needs to get stronger, and play meaner in games. This might be his coming out party to show the DI schools he’s got the motor and plays all out play to play. This kid has been in the trenches at Catholic as a varsity starter since his baby sophomore year. It’s hard for a big guy to start varsity as a sophomore, but Catholic needed this big guy to start back then. I’m looking forward to seeing how much the two years starting will pay off with him hopefully dominating for Catholic HS this season. I feel he will probably move to OG in college if he goes to a big DI school. IF he goes to a small DI school he would stay at DT. This kid has what you’re looking for, but again hopefully we will see him become more of a rusher this year, than just a big guy. He’s a great kid and already qualified with a high ACT and High GPA.

FB Scott Salinas (5-11, 210) a good looking kid wasn’t at practice that day, or I did not see him. I will have more on Scott later this month. Scott is an upcoming senior who’s very athletic and tough with the ball. He’s also a great student.

I would like to thank Dale Weiner again for letting me hang out and watch the team and visit with him before practice on a very busy day at Catholic HS.
