April 26, 2010 - I had one last college to visit in the state of Louisiana, and it was Nicholls State and new Head football coach Charlie Stubbs. I really enjoyed meeting Coach Stubbs; he’s a very detailed and organized coach. You can tell right off the bat that this is a coach who works like he’s in the Southeastern Conference (SEC), where Charlie coached in the past and some other great DI programs over the years.
Charlie Stubbs I feel will try and raise a lot of money to improve the facilities at the school for football. Nicholls State has good facilities, but to get the recruits they have to compete with the other schools in their conference for recruiting. I feel this coach will get it done for Nicholls State. It might take him two years , but I feel the recruiting will also pick up , and Nicholls State will recruit the whole state for the first time in many years.

Chuck Hepola, who’s also new at Nicholls State, is the Running Backs coach and the Recruiting Coordinator. Chuck spent one year at ULM in Monroe, and has family outside of Ruston. Look for Nicholls State to utilize coach Hepola contacts there for the Colonels. I had a chance to sit down with coach Hepola and was very impressed by the recruiting knowledge he has of Louisiana, and how important it is for Nicholls State to get most of its players from the state.
I met with several of the Nicholls State players before they went out for practice. QB LaQuinton Caston (5-11, 195), who can run a 4.55 forty and had 14 TD’s last year will be a major key to their season. I remember watching Caston play at Istrouma HS in Baton Rouge. Caston is built like a fast Linebacker, and he’s impressive in person. Punter Patrick Dolan, 6-1, 200 pounds, has a cannon leg, and the coaches feel like he has a NFL future possible. Patrick is from McGill Toolen HS in Mobile, AL. I asked Patrick if he knew Phelon Jones, who is at Alabama, and left LSU, and he said that he knew him very well, as well as former LSU DT Sidell Corely who now plays for Troy University. They were all teammates at the same high school in Alabama. LB Jordan Piper (5-11, 227) is built like a tank, and should have a great year for Nicholls State. Piper played high school ball at Ponchatoula HS.
