Top Offensive Guards in Louisiana for the 2013 Recruiting Class

by Lee Brecheen

Cameron Tom - Catholic High School (Baton Rouge)

May 16, 2012 – Monday I ranked offensive tackles who can also play guard in College.  Today I’m ranking the top offensive guards who can move over to center in college (some of these players).

I feel like the guards have the task of always making it happen for running plays.  They create holes for running backs, and sometimes — depending how athletic the player is — pull and lead block downfield on run plays.  They always seem to have the task of blocking more than one player every down.  Sometimes an athletic linebacker or a safety who runs a 4.5/40 might come through the middle of the offensive line finding a space blitzing, and the guards have to pick him up and be athletic enough to do that.

I ranked these kids based on technique and who can get up field pulling and leading the way for the running backs with a tough, aggressive style of blocking. You also need to be strong and have quick feet to play this position.

Here are my top offensive guards for the 2013 Class of Louisiana football prospects.  This list is 2013 Class seniors only.

Kenneth Santa Marina
Kenneth Santa Marina - McDonogh #35

May 14, 2012 - I will break down the top Offensive Tackles in Louisiana that have the most upside for College football because of great feet, hand eye coordination, technique, strength, toughness, ability to pull and block downfield, and finally the ability to pass block and run block in high school. The players who can play both OG and OT for college and run and pass block equally will get the higher grade from me.

Some of these kids will get better after the 2012 season and improve as both pass blockers and run blockers and some will not.  It depends on what type off season these kids have putting in the hard work for a tough upcoming football season in 2013.

I watched over 10,000 hours of film of these top players last year for this class and a lot of these kids the year before.  We filmed a lot of all kids statewide so I feel I can really tell the public who the true top players are overall because I’ve seen these kids play several times from all the high schools in Louisiana.

Lineman are hard to grade and rank compared to skill players who are always scoring touchdowns and making plays. You actually have to watch the same play three times because it’s so easy to concentrate on the skill players and you really have to see what happens at the line of scrimmage down after down to see a kids potential.

My rankings have nothing to do with anyone else’s and I feel like I will always give the public the true rankings of a kid’s ability as if they got it from a college coach. What I found with Kenneth Santa Marina and Josh Boutte is they don’t have a weakness in athletic ability; they have many gifts.  The key is for these kids to keep working hard and not back off of what got them here which is their hard work and commitment to get better every day.

Bolton High School Head Coach Reynolds Moore

May 4, 2012 - I had a chance to go through Alexandria on my way to Shreveport last week, and I really enjoyed my time at Peabody, Northwood Lena, and Bolton High Schools.

Bolton High School has some pretty good players coming up for the 2012 season.  There’s not a lot of depth, but quality kids.  I was able to talk to the principal, Misty Slayter, who was very helpful in letting me talk to their top recruits.  Head Coach Reynolds Moore was teaching, but I was able to tell him hello.  Coach Reynolds Moore is from Carthage, Mississippi.  Coach Moore is a good, young coach, he just needs more numbers for his football team.

At Peabody High School, I met the new Head Football Coach, Anthony Hicks, who’s from Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and is a nice young coach.  I enjoyed talking about some of the great players to come out of Hattiesburg over the years, and his current program at Peabody.  Peabody has some really good and young skill lineman coming up in the program.  The athletic director and Head Boys Basketball coach, Charles Smith, was very helpful in introducing me to everyone at the school.  Coach Smith’s resume is great.  As a Head Basketball coach he won 5 State Championships for Peabody High School.  He really liked Johnny Jones, the new hire at LSU.

Derrick McKee - Southern Lab

May 2, 2012 - Defensive End Derrick McKee from Southern Lab High School, who stands 6-6 and weighs 215 pounds, recently signed with Mississippi Gulf Coast Junior College and will play two years.  I predict he will come out in two years as a highly recruited Defensive End.  He will be in the 255 to 260 range in two years.  Right now Derrick can run a 4.65/40 and was a big time pass rusher in High School.

QB Nik McCarty (6-3, 185) and WR Cody Bordelon (5-10, 175), who are both from Calvary Baptist High School in Shreveport, are leaning to sign with Arkansas Monticello for football and possibly Baseball.

RB Trey Gilbert from Winnfield High School has decided to play football for Holmes Junior College in Mississippi.  Trey is a powerful 5-8, 195 pound running back with power between the tackles and quickness to burst outside for long gains.  I filmed this kid in 2011, and I loved watching him play the game with passion and high effort.  Trey could be a big time DI player in two years.

Parker Hufft - Country Day High School (Rhodes College)

April 26, 2012 - We just ran a story about football players from Louisiana who signed after signing day and we already have several more since the story ran last week to add to the list.

LB/DE Parker Hufft (6-4, 220) from Country Day High School in New Orleans just decided in the past week to go to Rhodes College over Richmond.  Parker is a kid who has a frame to weigh in the 255 pound range when he’s done, and I predict he will outgrow Linebacker, the position he played in High School, and be a good 6-4, 255 pound Defensive End and in the future.

Lebeaux Cooper (6-1, 185), a Defensive Back from Port Allen High School, will be in the 6-1, 195 to 200 pound range in two years of college football as a FS or SS in college. Cooper is going to a Junior College in Arizona called Eastern Arizona.

Defensive Tackle Marrick Charles (6-1, 300) from Destrehan is taking his talents to Coffeyville Junior College in Kansas and will play two years there as a quick footed, strong, tough, big,  and agile Defensive Tackle.  He will be starting Noseguard by the time he signs in 2014 with a big time DI program.  I filmed this kid many times in High School at Destrehan and love his upside as a player.
