What Happened to Tulane?

by Taylor Williams

Monday February 8, 2010 - When Tulane students reflect on their current and past experiences at one of the country’s best liberal arts schools, they remember the typical things- late nights studying for exams, Friday afternoons at the Boot, possibly joining a Greek organization. While events of this nature, coupled with the enigma and uniqueness of New Orleans, make the Tulane experience very memorable and special, it lacks major component- athletics.

Southern University is on the Way Back With Stump

by Lee Brecheen

Thursday February 4, 2010 - I was at Southern University’s recruiting banquet as a guest speaker for the eleventh time in fourteen years. This was the largest turnout I’ve ever seen for a recruiting banquet at Southern University. I was blown away and super impressed by the speech that the new head football coach, Stump Mitchell, gave to the Southern alumni.

National Signing Day - Key Notes

Tulane

                   Cody Mandell

Wednesday February 3, 2010 - 1:20 PM - After talking with recruiting coordinator Doug Litchenberger, on paper the three of the best out of state signees are Stephen Funderburk (S, from Florida), Kyle Davis (S, from Texas), and Adam Skidmore (OL , from New Jersey).

Also a part of this signing class is Trent Mackey who sat out last year as a transfer from Duke.  Mackey will play MLB and participate in spring practice for Tulane at 5-10, 230 hes a little heavier and more musceled up since he left Duke.

Cody Mandell (K/P) from Acadiana High School was committed to Tulane but did not sign today due to not being able to get into Tulane because academics.

LSU

LSU signee Eric Reid - Dutchtown

An interesting note; Wide receiver Kenbrell Tompkins out of El Camino California Junior College.  He is the top junior college wide receiver in the country who signed with Tennesee and actually enrolled, is trying to get releaed from his scholarship since the departure of Head Coach Lane Kiffin to USC.  Kenbrell has asked the Teneesee Coaching staff to let him out of his scholarship but part of their agreement with TN is that he can not sign with an SEC school or Oregon which is on their schedule.  LSU was one of the schools he wanted to sign with today but he couldn't.  This information was gathered by Lee Brecheen while he spoke with an El Camino Coach Tuesday night.  The filming of the movie the Longest Yard with Adam Sandler was filmed at El Camino Junior College - California.

LSU Signee James Wright - Belle Chasse

This is the best close job I've ever seen Les Miles have on signing day.  LSU has had trouble signing impact defensive tackles every year hes been at LSU out of state which has been part of the problem of the decline of the Defensive line.  But I take my hats off to head Coach Les Miles' Defensive Line Coach Brick Haley and Defensive Coordinator John Chavis for being able to lure JR Furguson, from Maryland, from Hargrave Prep School, Ken Adams (DE), from Alabama, from a Mississippi Junior College, and J.C. Copeland (Defensive Tackle) from Georgia, and this will now allow LSU's d line to have a chance to be dominant again.  If you throw in Sam Montgomery (DE) that signed with LSU last year from South Carolina, it shows you the connections that Brick Haley and Coach John Chavis have in South Carolina, Georiga, Alabama and Maryland.

Athlete Jarrett Fobbs from Huntington High School in Shreveport, LA is the first punt return and kick return recruit with size that LSU has signed since former LSU Tiger Sklyar Green of Higgens High School.  Fobbs is a cross between Skylar Green and a Percy Harvin of the Minnesotta Vikings which is something LSU lacked the last five years under Les Miles,  that now will improve the Special Teams and finally give LSU another slot receiver on offense like Skylar Green.

LA Tech

Head Coach Derrick Dooley leaving LA Tech for Tennessee not only hurt LA Tech's recruiting efforts in state, but also kept them from having a grade A Class.  Two notatble recruits that signed elsewhere were CB/ATH RobDonovan Lewis from Jonesboro-Hodge HS (signed with Memphis) and OG Dillion Day from West Monroe (signed with MS State).  These were two huge losses for their in state recruiting and the late coaching change also cost them some other in state players.

Southern

                 Keenan Jackson

The new coach Stump Mitchell really has impressed me with his ability to sign players where Southern hasn't been able to get quality athletes.  That being wide receiver Eric Thomas from Evangel Christian HS who caught over 100 passes and his teammate, ATH Virgil Williams who ran track for a state championship track team at Evangel.  Another notable is Dwayne Houston (6-5, 315) from Northside HS state champ in the shot put with a throw of 56/11 (indoor).  Jackson's teammate at Northside Keenan Jackson who is the 400 meter state champ will probably sign with Southern after signing day.  He's looking to see what he might get in track offers.  Darius Duffy (5-10, 200),a former Northside player, who just finished his eligibility at Northwestern State has been training in Dallas for the NFL Draft and will definately get a tryout with an NFL team if not drafted.  His former Head Coach at Northside told me that it would not surprise him if he ran in the low 4.4 in the 40.

Northwestern State

A big note about Northwestern State's signing class is that two signees that will enroll in the college but sit out because of grades are D.J. Palmer (6-0, 190) , athelete from Many HS, who if eligible would have had over 50 D1 offers.  Michael Norman (6-2, 195, DB) from Slidell HS would have had the same amount of offers D1.  If these kids can make the grade they'll be in the NFL one day.

Key note about signing day is that Lee Brecheen has found out that Pat Swilling (6-3, 215) from Brother Martin HS will probably pass up football offers today to sign a D1 basketball scholarship.  It is well known that he is one of the Top ten prospects in the state for basketball.  He was offered severl D1 Offers for Football.  His dad is the famous Pat Swilling Sr, who played many years as a LB for the New Orleans Saints.

The Top Offensive Lineman in Louisiana for Class of 2010 & Sleepers

by Lee Brecheen

January 28, 2010 - This is a position that’s the hardest to play as a true freshman going into college from High School. These kids have to know all the plays, all the blocks, all the techniques, and most of all, they have to be strong, quick, mean, and big to get by in DIV 1 as a true freshmen in IAA. You don’t have to be as big, and as quick to hit the field, because most of the Defensive Ends and Defensive Tackles are in the 240 to 260 range which is not like DIV 1 where all Defensive Ends are 250 to 300 pounds and run 4.8 forty’s or the Defensive Tackles are all about 285 to 330 and can run in the 5.2 range. I talk to a lot of DIV 1 coaches every day, and the hardest thing for them to find is a true Athletic, tall Offensive Tackle. The reason is because most big guys who can run are on Defense, and the big guys who are strong are mostly on offense.

Scoop on Ascension Catholic WR Matthew Pearce

by Lee Brecheen

January 26, 2010 - Matthew Pearce committed to Central Arkansas and Assistant Coach Hud Jackson who is from Louisiana and is son of legend Louisiana Coach Sonny Jackson.  Pearce is one of Louisiana's sleepers for 2010.  Pearce can play TE/DE in College.  Matthew will weigh about 240 to 260 and can run.  He had several dunks in High School as a basketball player.

The 2010 New Orleans Saints Were Built on Sleeper Talent and Coaches

by Lee Brecheen

January 25, 2010 - The 2010 New Orleans Saints, are a team lead by players that where unknowns for the most part, if you throw out Reggie Bush RB USC, DT Sedrick Ellis USC, Jeremy Shockey TE from Miami Hurricanes, Darren Sharper DB, and Jonathan Vilma LB from Miami Hurricanes, Will Smith DE Ohio State and QB Drew Brees from Purdue. This is a team lead by drafted no name players, and free agents players that were not house hold names.

SOUTHEASTERN’S CONNECTION TO THE SUPER BOWL

by Mike Miller

January 22, 2010 - As Who Dat Nation prepares for the biggest game in New Orleans Saints history, a pair of Southeastern Louisiana University football players may have played an unknown, but pivotal role in what will transpire this weekend. Back in the heat and humidity of last summer, two Lions went to Mississippi to work out with Brett Favre. One of the Lions even managed to make his way onto national television and became a video sensation. Here’s the hidden truth behind the story that could end up with the New Orleans Saints finally making it to the Super Bowl.

Recruiting Scoop on Belle Chasse Wide Receiver James Wright

by Lee Brecheen

January 20, 2010 - James Wright has only one official visit lined up from LSU and it may be his last.  He will announce his school of choice on signing day and LSU leads his committment choices.  He's the best high school football wide receiver, I've seen, since Michael Clayton who played at Christian Life and LSU.

Top Louisiana Running Backs for Class of 2010

 by Lee Brecheen

January 19, 2010 - After watching film statewide over the last three years for this class, meeting, seeing in person from practice and games, I will list the top Running Backs in two categories, Big Backs, and Small Backs. Big Backs are kids that are either Tall, with the room to be big in college, or not tall in Height, but powerful backs for the next level. Small backs are the twiner guys; these are kids that a lot of college coaches have a tough time deciding if they can take the pounding every play running between the tackles in College Football.

From Green Wave to Greenies

 by Lee Brecheen

January 18, 2010 - With competition intensifying from rivals St. Charles and John Curtis, Coach Nelson Stewart, head coach of the Isidore Newman Greenies, was forced to draw upon his experience at Tulane in implementing some changes to Newman’s program. The element of innovation in particular became critical, in the form of revised protection schemes to allow more shotgun passing and play action sequences.

The Next Terrance Cody;  Glen Oaks High School Defensive Tackle Nicholas Williams

by Lee Brecheen

January 12, 2010 -  Everybody that has watched college football the last two years knows the name Terrance Cody, the DT ( 6-5 375 pounds) from Alabama.  I'm here to tell you about the next Terrance Cody will be Nick Williams, a DT from Glen Oaks HS.  I've watched Nick Williams play for the last three years.  He's 385 to 400 pounds, has the hop in his feet of a nimble LB, and the effort you never hardly see from many lineman period. This kid can run laterally, sideline to sideline, and he makes plays.  He's impossible to move, and always seems to be in on the play.

Top QB’s in Louisiana for Class of 2010 and Sleepers

by Lee Brecheen

January 11, 2010 -  This is the most scrutinized position by college recruiters of any position in High School football, sometimes I feel too much is the QB position. The coaches break down everything when it comes to someone not being tall enough , not having touch on the ball, can kid play under center, or can he play in the shot gun, is he quick enough, can he throw the out pass, being a leader, fast enough, or not having a cannon arm.  Let’s take a look at the best QB”s coming out of High School this year for 2010.

Top Fullbacks in Louisiana for Class of 2010

by Lee Brecheen

January 8, 2010 - There are two types are Fullbacks when it comes to college football; blockers, and those that can run and block. It’s usually not as hard to find a powerful blocker coming out of High School, but it always seems to be a challenge to find someone like a Jacob Hester, 5-11 225, who played at Evangel Christian HS, LSU, and now currently the San Diego Chargers.  Let’s take a look at the best Fullbacks and sleepers coming out in the 2010 class for Louisiana.

McNeese State Cowboys Getting a Steal in Sulphur High School Athlete Will Hassein

What LSU Needs  to Fix for the Future

by Lee Brecheen

January 5, 2010 -  You always hear Football and winning is a game of inches, well I believe there are certain problems, that LSU has to straighten out to get back to winning the big games, to play for Championships. The phrase Football is a game of inches to me means (always won and lost in the trenches), and that’s controlling the line of scrimmage.

LSU has some of the best Skill talent in the country, I will go out and say LSU has better WR’s, and just as good of RB’s, and DB’s, than even Florida , and Alabama as a group. WR Brandon LaFell ,WR Reuban Randle, FS Chad Jones, WR Terrance Tolliver, TE/HB Richard Dickson, SS Brandon Taylor, RB Charles Scott, RB Keiland Williams, RB Stevan Ridley, ATH/RB Trindon Holliday, TE/HB DeAngelo Peterson, CB Patrick Peterson, WR/ATH Russell Shephard, and RB Michael Ford , who I can’t understand redshirted. You can be ranked #1 in recruiting every year, but you better be signing dominant defensive and offensive lineman in this league called the SEC. I feel like there’s been a drop off in recruiting for these positions compared to the LSU standard, when they won National and SEC Championships.

 Inside Scoop

January 4, 2010 - University High School Quarterback Blake Hollingsworth (6-2, 205) was offered last night by Arkansas State Coach Maurice Harris.  The UL Ragin Cajuns are recruiting Hollingsworth as well and he is planning on visiting there soon.  Also, an offer might be coming soon from Marshall College, a D1 school, where Randy Moss played.

Ranking Wide Receivers and Sleepers - Class of 2010

by Lee Brecheen

January 4, 2010 -  There are three types of Wide Receivers you usually see in any level of College Football, One, is usually tall, fast, Deep Post route Receivers, who can run under 4.6 forty, and break the long gains after the catch, then there’s the Tall or Short possession receivers, who are not fast usually in the 4.6 to 4.7 range, but have good hands, and run really good routes. Then there’s the slot receiver, who usually is too small to be a running back, but not big enough to be a true post wide out, usually these guys are like 5-7 to 5-10, they are usually either super quick or super fast, Example Super quick, Wes Welker, Texas Tech, and Currently New England Patriots, or a Fast Version being a DeSean Jackson, 5-9 165, California, and currently Philadelphia Eagles. Jackson can run in the 4.3 range, and Welker is only in the low 4.5 forty range, but wow is he quick and has great hands, runs great routes.

Tight Ends: Rankings and Sleepers for Class of 2009

by Lee Brecheen

December 30, 2009 - This is a position where it’s hard to find a true Tight End playing the Position in High School for College. Usually the case in High School, it’s always an undersized kid, that’s not big enough to be an offensive lineman or defensive lineman, but helps block for run plays. This year’s crop of Louisiana Tight Ends is more of the H-Back types, who can run, and not big on blocking.

Acadiana High School Leaders

The team ended its season with a two game winning streak over Plain Dealing High School and as well as a thrilling 22 to 21 win over Grambling State Laboratory School. Coach Woods believes that the momentum his team gained from victories of the last two games of the season, together with a nucleus of returning juniors and seniors will help Logansport achieve its main goal that it has going into every year, which is to host a home playoff game.

Recruit Spotlight: Catholic New Iberia Quarterback, Taylor Bullock

by Lee Brecheen

November 24, 2009 - The biggest sleeper player in the state of Louisiana, is a kid named Taylor Bullock, from Catholic New Iberia.  He's QB , who stands 6-2, is 215 to 220 pounds, runs a 4.69 forty, is left handed, and looks like a Tim Tebow with his ability to run and throw with great touch on the run. As he finishes his senior season, his passing arm has shattered records and propelled the Lions to the brink of a Southland Conference title and a first ever trip to the FCS playoffs.

by Taylor Williams

November 1, 2009 - The McDonogh 35 Roneagles have had many difficulties and successes in playing up the 5A level schools as a 4A school. Coach Reese firmly believes in studying the successful 5A programs as a means of preparing his team and treating every game as if it were against a major opponent, and this approach also carries over to many of his player's academic performances.

A victory could also mark the return of Southeastern to the Top 25 polls since the football program was dropped in 1985.

Neville High School Football & Recruits

by Lee Brecheen

November 11, 2009 - This is the most talented team I’ve seen in a long time at Neville High School. This team has a big time QB Taylor Burch, big time skill players in RB Cedrico Pollard, WRS, Jeremy Runner, and Brandon Calhoun, a veteran offensive line and a great defense, that’s cat quick to the ball, lead by veteran LB Waderrious Sellers, DB Charles Blade, the veteran defensive line of DT Brandon Collins, .DE Duke Guillory, and DT Simeon Stevenson. Mattew Sguyres the K, has a cannon leg, and has been consistent for over three years kicking for the team. I put Neville in the same class for having weapons on offense at the skill positions like teams as West Monroe, Central, Lutcher, Breaux Bridge, and Edna Karr and John Curtis High School.

Adjusted Soaring

by Taylor Williams

November 5, 2009 - the New Orleans’ Catholic League’s Archbishop Shaw Eagles have successfully overcome numerous injuries throughout the season to find themselves just one game behind 5A powerhouse Archbishop Rummel, who they face this weekend in the regular season finale. Looking at the results of their games (undefeated in district league play), as well as their depth on both sides of the ball, it would seem that the Eagles have had relatively smooth sailing.

Establishing Knightly Consistency

by Taylor Williams

November 4, 2009 - With so many teams competing for the coveted 5A Catholic League title, the need for consistent, solid play becomes critical. David Johnson, rookie head coach of the Saint Augustine Purple Knights, has described this philosophical coaching element as crucial in establishing and maintaining success on the field, and sees it as the cornerstone from which subsequent coaching ideals are derived.

Central Has All the Football Weapons

by Lee Brecheen

November 3, 2009 - Central High School in the 1970’s was a powerhouse with Head Coach Sonny Jackson at the Helm. Quarterback Steve Ensminger in the late 70’s had Central in the title hunt for a couple of years. It took until the year 2007 to turn the program around to be title contenders again. Head Coach Sid Edwards started building the program and boy has he ever. In 2008 Central was a play away from beating last year’s State Champion, Destrehan, in the play offs to go to the Superdome.

Crusading: One Step at a Time

by Taylor Williams

October 30, 2009 - All coaches know that championships aren’t won overnight, regardless of the sport, the players, or the competition. But what about defending them? According to Mark Bonis, head football coach of the Brother Martin Crusaders, defending championships is even more difficult than winning them.

Playing Offensive Defense

by Taylor Williams

October 29, 2009 - The 5A Catholic League is a metaphorical battleground where teams meet once a week to duke it out till the bitter end. In a world where competition is incredibly stiff and every team a contender, all teams must have a coherent plan of attack, and no one understands that more than Wade Keiser, head coach of the Jesuit Blue Jays.
